Road closures and chain controls in place as heavy snow hits South Lake Tahoe

3:40 p.m. update: It is taking three hours from the Y to Meyers, so if you're on the road you may want to consider going inside for the rest of the day. The snow is not letting up and there is a lot more to come.

Traffic heading west from South Lake Tahoe is still slow going, and there have been several weather and traffic relate incidents on US50 west of Lake Tahoe. At this time, emergency vehicles are at the scene of a three-car accident near Kyburz. The road has reopened but may need to close again to remove one of the cars.

An avalanche on the Carson Pass is closing SR-88 again, just after it was reopened. According to CHP, no vehicles were involved.

I80 remains open, but traffic is slow with numerous accidents.

12:20 p.m. update: SR-89 around Emerald Bay Road is now closed. Keller Road off of Pioneer Trail is now closed due to multiple cars "going sideways" on the road.
An accident at Elks Club Road and Pioneer Trail is slowing traffic.

The latest atmospheric river to hit California is taking its aim on Lake Tahoe, but not exactly in the form that forecasters predicted.

Their forecast called for rain Monday, and as of 10 a.m. its been heavy snow, hampering travelers as they may their way home after the holiday weekend.

The following traffic issues are hindering a quick exit on Highway 50, SR-88 and other surrounding roadways.

As of 11:45 a.m.:

Traffic is at a standstill in Meyers, and Lake Tahoe Blvd at Sawmill pond is closed for traffic heading to North Upper Truckee Road. The road will be closed soon for avalanche control.

An accident has been reported on Kingsbury Grade, SR-207.

Carson Spur is closed due to heavy snow and Carson Pass is closed for avalanche control. No estimated time to reopen.

In El Dorado County, US50 has the Westbound traffic lanes reduced approximately 2 miles west of Ice House Road near Bridal Veil Falls due to a roadway issues. Expect slowing in this area.

Chain controls are up on all mountain roads. Be safe and keep and eye on current conditions.
