Cameron Park man identified as Sunday's missing swimmer in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Cameron Park, California man has been identified as the swimmer who went missing in Lake Tahoe on Sunday, September 9, 2018.

Multiple agencies responded to the 5:36 p.m. call for help and a possible drowning on the lake near Nevada Beach including the Coast Guard, Tahoe Douglas Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, El Dorado County Sheriff (EDSO) and Douglas County Sheriff's Offices (DCSO).

A family had rented a boat and were enjoying time on the water when two of the occupants jumped into the lake to swim. One of the men, Chaitanya Datla, a 32-year-old Cameron Park man, jumped in the lake without a lifejacket on. While he was swimming, the boat floated away from Chaitanya and he disappeared under the surface of the water. The second person was pulled to safety and transported to a hospital according to DCSO.

SLTPD and SLTFR were originally called due to their boats being on the lake. They were joined by the Coast Guard and the boats attempted to locate the victim by doing coordinated searches of the area which has depths up to 1,100 feet.

On Monday, the EDSO Dive team, along with US Coast Guard, SLTPD and DCSO, searched the same area of the lake and did not locate Chaitanya. An underwater drone was used along with K9s.

EDSO is still looking for Chaitanya, who has been listed as a missing person. The accident investigation is being conducted by SLTPD.
