Tahoe Homeless Coalition receives grant for year-round mental health services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A donation from Vail Resorts Chief Executive Officer Rob Katz and his wife, Elana Amsterdam is allowing the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) to offer more mental health services to those experiencing homelessness on the South Shore.

In December, the Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust made more than $2M in contributions to support emotional wellness programs in nearly every mountain resort community in which Vail Resorts operates, including South Lake Tahoe.

South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce announces name change

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With more than one Chamber of Commerce serving the South Shore there is often confusion about their names and functions.

In 2005 the Tahoe Douglas Chamber and South Lake Tahoe Chamber merged into the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (LTSSCC) for the whole community, both sides of the state line. A group of California side businesses then formed the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce.

Pizza for Pups raising funds for Animal Coalition of Tahoe

Letters: January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month

As January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, one might ask, “exactly what is human trafficking?”

Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by means of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, for the purpose of exploitation. Sex trafficking is defined as a commercial sex act that is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age. Of particular note is the automatic classification of trafficking in children under 18 years of age.

Tahoe Warm Room open house for the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is hosting an open house at the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room on February 7, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event will begin with tours of the Warm Room from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Warm Room is the overnight emergency shelter we operate each winter to give our homeless neighbors respite from the worst of the winter weather. This year the Warm Room is located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe, next door to Ernie’s Coffee Shop.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society disbands, turns operations over to Truckee Tahoe group

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost two years after their executive director embezzled almost $60,000 from the Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS), the nonprofit tasked with helping local pets, is folding after 51 years of serving the South Lake Tahoe community.

A new board of directors had taken several steps, including the sale of their Emerald Bay Road building and laying off of employees, to get LTHS back on their feet but could never get the nonprofit's community standing back.

SnowGlobe gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SnowGlobe’s 2018 is over but their donations to the local community will continue for months, years and decades to come.

Train to volunteer at Tahoe Warm Room

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will host a volunteer training on Wednesday, January 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cowork Tahoe, 3079 Harrison Ave #12, in South Lake Tahoe.

Volunteers who work in the Warm Room during operations are required to attend a training session and participate in a basic background check. The training covers vision and mission, roles and responsibilities, and Warm Room rules and procedures.

Past volunteers are welcome to attend to see the space and get a refresher course.

Interactive map shows plowed bike paths in Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition has released their first online bike map that shows the Lake Tahoe region’s regularly snow-plowed bike trails.

People searching for a plowed bike route can now toggle a special seasonal layer in the nonprofit organization’s interactive bike map, available online at tahoebike.org/map. Many of Tahoe’s local jurisdiction clear snow from their shared-use paths, typically after they have completed plowing local roads.

Tahoe Warm Room finds new location - opens December 12

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced the opening of their Warm Room for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, December 12. This year they will be located inside the old Emerald Bay Dentistry office at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.

The Warm Room will operate nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. through April 2019.

For the fourth year, the Warm Room will provide overnight refuge from the elements in a safe and warm environment for approximately twenty-five adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness during winter months.

Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.

Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

Get your dog's photo with Santa at Animal Coalition of Tahoe events

It's time again for the Animal Coalition of Tahoe's (ACT) annual photo nights where your dog can get photographed with Santa, just in time for those holiday cards.

For two nights, December 5 and 11, ACT will have professional photographer Jenny Scales set up at Tahoe Best Friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. They are located near the recycling center at 2197 Ruth Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The holiday fun run, the Turkey Trot, was resurrected by the Lake Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless this year and their first event was a successful one.

Organizers were hopeful in their goal of 100 runners, but almost 150 participated in the 5k run in South Lake Tahoe on November 18. Those 10-and under ran in the Gobble Wobble, a trip around the SLT Recreation Center with the length dependent on age.

The top three places for men and women each won a turkey and the youth were awarded medals.

Reno-Tahoe area no longer in the running to host 2030 Winter Olympics

On Monday, the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition (RTWGC) announced it has officially declined an invitation to bid for a future Winter Olympics. With their departure, Salt Lake City and Denver remain as the last two selected finalists by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to be a future bid city.

They had a deadline of November 9, 2018 to submit responses to a detailed workbook covering the areas of bid vision, venue planning, transportation planning, security, budgets and public engagements among other topics.

American Century and LTVA award almost $79k to South Shore nonprofits

Twenty-six local nonprofits were awarded $78,974 Thursday in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship thanks to funds raised during the 2018 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

“The continued support from our partners American Century Investments and NBC Sports means so much to this community,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “These contributions benefit so many in the South Shore a long time after the tournament ends.”

Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition distributes over 200 free bike racks throughout Tahoe Basin

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition is distributing 215 free bicycle racks throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin, creating secure parking for 430 bicycles at key public destinations.

The public and public safety agencies came out for National Night Out on August 7 at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe. Booths were set up by California Highway Patrol, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Barton Heath, California Conservation Corps, South Lake Tahoe Action Team, El Dorado County STAR, El Dorado County Sheriff's Search & Rescue, South Lake Tahoe Drug Free Coalition and the El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Food was provided by Kiwanis.

The event was also a toy drop off for Toys For Tots.

National Forest Foundation receives nearly $13 million for forest restoration work in Tahoe/Truckee

Bike challenge week riders pedal 11,215 miles and save $2,493 in gas purchases

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

Lake Spirit Awards celebrate dedication to Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) recognized four people for their commitment to protecting and enhancing Lake Tahoe’s environment with Lake Spirit Awards on Wednesday.

Young Colombian rider earns Leader Jersey by winning Amgen Stage 2

With just over 2k left to ride to the summit of Gibraltar Road, Team Sky’s 21-year-old Egan Bernal (COL) attacked and swiftly climbed away to a solo victory to close out Stage 2 of the 2018 Amgen Tour of California. Tao Geoghegan Hart and his Team Sky teammates set an unyielding pace all the way up the steep grade in support of lead rider Bernal to help launch him to his fourth victory of the 2018 season, shoring up the race lead as well as nearly all of the classification wins with today’s epic climb and overall performance.

Barton Foundation to give away $50,000 in grants

The Barton Foundation will be awarding $50,000 in grant funding to improve community health. As part of Barton Health’s commitment to community health and collaboration, this annual grant cycle provides funding for programs and services that positively impact the health of the local community. Spring Cleanup 2018 coming up in South Lake Tahoe

Help spruce up South Lake Tahoe neighborhoods and "Keep Tahoe Clean" on Saturday, May 12 during the 3rd annual Spring Cleanup day. Last year, 118 volunteers spent a morning picking up nearly 1,500 pounds of trash.

The Clean Tahoe Program and City of South Lake Tahoe are organizing the day, so get together with your friends, family and neighbors to remove litter from our community. Check-in at the cleanup locations will begin at 9:00 a.m. and volunteers will be assigned a stretch of road to clean. Afterwards, everyone will meet up at Bijou Park for a FREE lunch and celebration.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra fundraiser Saturday: Find out where donations go

Many people donate both money and auction items to the Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra club for their annual Elegant Evening which occurs on Saturday, April 21. What many don't know is where those donations go. There was question recently in the community about donations, so the club wanted to clear up any misunderstandings.

The club recently created a diagram to better explain where each penny goes as they don't have must left over funds after they issue scholarships, grants and other forms of financial support.

Kudos: Drug Store Project successful due to community partnerships

If you had walked onto the LTCC campus on Tuesday, April 3, you would have never guessed that there were 325 6th grade youth and 220 agency and volunteer workers throughout the corridors, all learning information on how and why to keep themselves safe from drugs. “Choices, what are yours?” was the theme of our efforts in keeping our youth drug free. With the country’s attitudes and norms about drug use changing, times are even more difficult for our kids.

Another step towards South Lake Tahoe cannabis ordinance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be an ordinance regulating the retail sale of cannabis in South Lake Tahoe, that is certain, but when it will be in place is uncertain.

During a special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council Tuesday afternoon and evening, several areas were discussed from zoning to processes, and many were narrowed down enough so the acting City Attorney, Sergio Rudin, can bring a draft back at the April 17 council meeting. If there are no major changes that document can be voted on as a "first reading" with an ordinance 30 days later.

South Lake Tahoe Warm Room to close on Easter Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe will be closing for the season on Sunday, April 1, 2018. They opened on Christmas Eve inside the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church as they had trouble securing a place for the winter.

Final funding in place for South Lake Tahoe's Greenway Trail

The next phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail will now be completed by El Dorado County, a move that is estimated to save $1,000,000.

During this week's meeting of the California Tahoe Conservancy Board, approval was given to the transfer of a $3.182 million grant to El Dorado County to build the next phase of the South Tahoe Greenway Shared Use Trail. Conservancy staff recommended transferring the project from the State to the County who they said is in an advantageous position to deliver the project, and has indicated that it can complete the Project in a timely manner.

Column: Making progress on Tahoe’s housing shortage

Like many communities across the country, the Tahoe Basin is facing an affordable housing crisis. The high cost to buy or rent a home is simply unaffordable for most Tahoe residents. It’s a problem for people of many economic backgrounds, including middle-income teachers, nurses, police, and firefighters.
