Riding 129 miles and climbing 15,000-plus feet all in one day demands a rigorous training schedule and Kirkwood’s annual “Near Death Experience” bike camp can give riders the inside edge they need to complete such a challenging task.

Drug take-back nets 61 pounds of prescription meds

On April 27 the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration provided the public its sixth opportunity in three years to take back unwanted prescription drugs and collected 61 pounds of prescription medication in South Lake Tahoe, which is the most collected in South Lake Tahoe since this program was started.

In Sacramento, the DEA announced it disposed of 17,741 pounds of unwanted prescription medication, up from last year’s weight of 9,952 pounds.

Edgewood Tahoe opens season May 9 with $1.6 million in upgrades

More than $1.6 million in course improvements highlight the 45th season of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, set to open at Stateline, Lake Tahoe May 9.

A 10-year environmental plan meant to reduce impact and save water has been put in place with upgrades to the irrigation system as well as drought and stress tolerant grass. Other improvements include GPS devices on carts that feature yardage and video tips from pros.

The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.
The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.

The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

Local Author, Holocaust Survivor Shares His Story at LTCC

Mr. Malmed will share a short documentary film, discuss his amazing story of survival, and sign copies of his book, “We Survived…At Last I Speak.” Books will be available for purchase and signing, and $5 from every sale will go to the LTCC Foundation in support of student scholarships and academic success. Live at Lakeview to continue through 2014; City of South Lake Tahoe awards contract

The Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series will return to Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe every Thursday this summer, June 20 through August 29 (excluding July 4).

The City of South Lake Tahoe has recognized the Live at Lakeview Summer Music Series as a Signature Summer Event and awarded a contract to On Course Events for the production of this event series at Lakeview Commons for the next two summers through 2014.

Bring your medications for disposal to Safeway at 1020 Johnson, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is seeking proposals from qualified professionals interested in developing, managing, and producing signature summer events held weekly at the City's Lakeview Commons facility.

Lakeview Commons, SnowGlobe rules back to council

Proposed regulations surrounding special events in South Lake Tahoe, including concerts at Lakeview Commons and the SnowGlobe Music Festival, will be back in front of the City Council next week.

The city has made several revisions to the proposals following a February meeting where event promoters expressed concerns about the regulations.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is offering Emergency Preparation Guides for community members. As part of the City's initiative to increase communications, we will be offering a 12 part monthly series during 2013 highlighting emergency preparedness. These useful tools will assist citizens in preparing for emergencies.

The first emergency guide in the series focuses on “Action Plans” and provides suggestions for creating a family emergency disaster plan. The guide also provides contact numbers for agencies located within City limits and throughout El Dorado County.

Shaun White to become member of Tahoe Mountain Club

Tahoe Mountain Club is excited to announce two-time Olympic gold medalist, snowboard and skateboard sensation Shaun White as the newest member of Tahoe Mountain Club.

As one of the most prominent figures in snowboarding and skateboarding, Shaun White has called Northstar California his home resort since 2011. After the first season of training at Northstar, White initiated a conversation with Tahoe Mountain Club as a means for expanding his involvement with the resort and the region.

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort team riders and South Lake Tahoe locals Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, and Hannah Teter will invade Aspen, Colorado, January 24-28, 2013 for the 17th Winter X Games. All three Sierra Resort athletes have pre-qualified for X Games and will shoot to make it back-to-back podiums.

Well-known for its commitment to both freestyle terrain parks and maintaining one of Lake Tahoe’s best Superpipes, Sierra Resort is proud to be home to some of the best athletes in the world.

Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial fundraiser to benefit Heavenly Foundation teams

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Eric Nageotte-Lowe Memorial Fundraiser to celebrate the life of former South Lake Tahoe resident and Heavenly Freestyle Team member, Eric Nageotte-Lowe this Saturday, Jan. 26, from 5pm to 8pm at the Himmel Haus, 2819 Saddle Rd. across from Heavenly Mountain’s California base area.

“While Eric was a great skier,” said his coach Jere Crawford, “he was an even better person.”

More snowshoe cocktail races planned at Beacon

The Beacon Bar and Grill at Camp Richardson in South Lake Tahoe will hold its next wild and spirited evening snowshoe cocktail races Feb. 16 and again on March 16. Both events begin at 7 p.m.

The events are free to participate in with snowshoes provided by Camp Richardson’s Mountain Sports Center in South Lake Tahoe.

Along with the snowshoe cocktail races, this South Lake Tahoe event will include food and drink specials, prizes for winners and losers, and happy hour prices until closing.
