The Tahoe Area Coordinating Council for the Disabled is being recognized by area restaurants in celebration of the council's 31 years. Steamers Bar and Grill in South Lake Tahoe will host lunch, dinner and a City Council Candidate's Meet and Greet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 23. Steamers is located at 2236 Lake Tahoe Blvd. near Tahoe Keys Blvd.

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will spice up October with a mixer at the famed lakefront Beacon Bar & Grill at Camp Richardson Resort, Oct. 17 from 6:30 – 9 p.m. Tantalizing “Rum Runner’s” will be available for $5 and will complement their new menu and food specials during the event.

The third annual “South Lake Tahoe Food and Wine Festival” arrives at Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe, Oct. 5 – 7, for an early autumn weekend of great food, fine wine and high spirits.
Events include lots of dining and tasting experiences, plus discussions, presentations and demonstrations by celebrated food and wine experts. Of course, food and wine are the biggest stars and a spectacular “Epicurean Expo” – featuring sumptuous dishes from Harrah's best restaurants, top-shelf spirits and the finest wines of Napa Valley and beyond – highlights the weekend.

As Natalie Mar staggered up the steep switchbacks last weekend near Lake Tahoe, she wasn't certain she'd make it.
She had just scaled a 12-foot wall, dived into a bath of icy water and slithered through mud while ducking barbed wires that dangled 8 inches overhead. And now she was running an 11-mile trail with a 1,500-foot elevation change.
"I'm going to die," Mar, 24, thought.
But she didn't, and she cleared the switchbacks. Her reward: to belly-crawl under live wires.

With Nov. 16 as its opening day, the countdown is on at Heavenly Mountain Resort. From intense competitions and events to the return of the halfpipe, excitement is stirring at Lake Tahoe’s largest winter playground.

South Shore Lake Tahoe celebrates fall with Germany in mind during OktoberFest at Camp Richardson Oct. 6-7. This annual festival dishes up two full days of great food, hand-crafted items, family games and numerous drink samplings. Admission is free and so is the parking.
Kids of all ages can search for the perfect pumpkin at the festival’s pumpkin patch. The entire family will enjoy events especially geared to children, including games for all age groups, from the Bouncy Castle, to face painting. Adults can enjoy the Beer and Wine Garden, offering a variety of great beer and wines.

Tahoe Improv Players will perform at Unity at the Lake, Sept. 21, 7-9 p.m. 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd. (across from Rec. Center.) Refreshments will be available for purchase beginning at 6:30. Heavenly and Kirkwood resorts, through the Vail Resorts Echo program, partnered with the City of South Lake Tahoe for the third annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Saturday, Sept. 8. Through the project, 179 resort employees, friends and family put the final touches on Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach, including planting trees and shrubs, laying sod, installing park benches, picking up trash, and re-distributing sand to even out the beach.

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: A councilmember has been linked to a bribery investigation. If anything is amiss, the repercussions will be significant. If nothing is amiss, the devastation to this councilmember, her reputation and her family is immeasurable and horrific.

But no matter the outcome, the damage has already been done. Trust and confidence in the city’s leadership has been shaken. A big question mark — “what now?” — hangs in the air. Which brings us back to the room: The City of South Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Sierra Century Ride 2012 is slated for Saturday, September 22, offering incredible scenery and excellent exercise, all benefiting a great cause. Riders can choose a 100-mile, 60-mile or 30-mile route and enjoy breathtaking vistas and the crisp mountain air of autumn in the Sierra.

All of the routes start and finish in The Village at Squaw Valley, and all benefit the music students at North Tahoe Middle and High schools. While the event's moniker includes the word ‘century,' the 100-miler is just one of three rides offered in this annual Tahoe event.

As Labor Day weekend nears, Vail Resorts now offers season passes for the 2012-13 season. The Lake Tahoe Local Pass offers access to more than 263 trails, 14 terrain parks and 10,270 acres of terrain at Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood in California and Nevada. Ski or ride more than four days in one season and, priced at $419, the Tahoe Local Pass pays for itself, then ski or ride for free the rest of the season.

Foodies and wine lovers alike are invited to attend the variety of Sample the Sierra festivities during the 3rd annual farm-to-fork festival over Labor Day Weekend. Friday, August 31st kicks off Sample the Sierra with a Winemaker and Chef’s Table dinner at Crystal Basin Bistro in Camino on the Western Slope of the Sierras. Saturday, September 1st hosts a Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company featuring the award winning wines of Synapse “Microwinery” and locally made gifts.

For the second time in less than a year, Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III will speak at Lake Tahoe, this time as a special guest speaker of the 2012 Lake in the Sky Air Show, Aug. 24-26 at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
Sullenberger gained fame when he successfully landed US Airways Flight 1549, which had been disabled by striking a flock of Canada geese, in the Hudson River off Manhattan, New York City, on January 15, 2009. All of the 155 passengers and crew aboard the aircraft survived.

Lake Tahoe training partners and friends Dusty Wunderlich, Scott Parlett and Brandon Caskey enjoy the challenge of pushing themselves in the great outdoors and have decided to take on a big feat as ambassadors to raise money for grass roots humanitarians projects through Lake Tahoe-based Growing WorldWide Opportunity Foundation.

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals inaugural TRYP-Stock will raise funds for Tahoe’s Animal Humane Society, Saturday, August 18 from 1 - 5 p.m. at El Dorado Beach - the new Lakeview Commons. The 60s-themed "Peace, Love & Puppies" party provides locals, visitors and kids of all ages, an afternoon filled with music on the beach, costumes, games, contests, vendors, food and beverages.

Is it possible to be thrilled and relaxed at the same time?

I learned the answer to this question hanging beneath the canopy of a paraglider as it soared several hundred feet over the forested ridge that runs along the border between California and Nevada on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The excitement of flying through the air under an oversized parachute was matched only by the peaceful beauty of the blue lake below. It's a vantage point that might have left the great Mark Twain speechless.

Music, food, contests and an all-round weekend centered around the hometown will be featured at the Tahoe Mountain Faire, August 11-12 at the Tahoe Valley Campground, 175 Melba Drive in South Lake Tahoe.
