The bomb that shook Lake Tahoe

A twisted chunk of metal, a file of yellowing newspapers and a million memories from 35 years ago are constant reminders of the Harvey’s Casino Resort bombing for retired FBI agent Bill Jonkey.

History Hunt: Nine original street lights remain in Genoa

While many may not know the name of Lillian Virgin Finnegan, they probably know the Genoa Candy Dance.

Lillian is the woman who started the Genoa Candy Dance in 1919 to raise money to purchase street lights for the town. The dance was held at the Raycraft Hotel, and Lillian and other Genoa women made candy to serve at the dance. In the years that followed, the annual dance continued as a way to raise money to pay the town's electric bill for the street lights. It was considered the "Big Event of the Season" by the people in the Carson Valley, Reno and surrounding communities.

Rebirth and rebranding of Reno/Sparks will affect Lake Tahoe

Once considered rundown and dirty, Reno, as well as neighboring Sparks, is experiencing a staggering rebirth. Only eight percent of their economy now comes from the gaming and tourism industry, with the remainder coming from a boom of the relocation of manufacturing and distribution companies.

What is evident is that the Reno of today is not the Reno of 25 years ago. It isn't even the same Reno of four years ago.

Fire in electrical room at Harvey's knocks out power to part of hotel

The lights are back on in the Mountain Tower at Harvey's Lake Tahoe after a fire in the hotel casino's electrical room Friday evening kept guests in the dark for about four hours.

According to the Front Desk Supervisor on duty at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, the rooms now have power but the elevators are not operating, so all guests must access their rooms by the stairs.

NV Energy is still on the scene.

Firefighters from Tahoe Douglas Fire kept the fire contained to the spot it started according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin.

No further details are available at this time.

Tens of thousands headed to South Lake Tahoe

With the three-day weekend starting for many on Friday, visitors started arriving in South Lake Tahoe early Thursday. If the amount of congestion on local roads and the crowds in the grocery stores are any indication, this is going to be a very busy holiday!

An estimated 50,000 to 55,000 people will be using South Lake Tahoe hotels, motels, campgrounds, timeshares and vacation home rentals. Another 50,000-70,000 will be enjoying the fireworks from the South Shore. This includes full time residents, part time residents and drive in day visitors.

Kids get paid for checking in their devices at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel

Since South Lake Tahoe is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, a local hotel is adding an incentive for guests under the ago of 17 to get out and explore.

Opinion: We need to keep historical buildings for future generations

As I sat on the lawn in front of the historical Dangberg Ranch on Sunday, I smiled and imagined that South Lake Tahoe could have such a place.

The house that stands at the Dangberg Ranch, which is adjacent to the Park Ranch on Hwy 89 just north of Mottsville Lane, was home to a family that played an important role in the growth and shaping of the Carson Valley. They founded Minden, NV and established many businesses in the areas of banking, farming and a hotel. Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park preserves this essential chapter in Nevada’s history.

Vocal crowd at SLT City Council's Vacation Home Rental meeting

Once again, an audience full of mainly Realtors and property managers filled the South Lake Tahoe City Council Chambers as the topic of Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) was on the agenda for discussion.

Renting a vacation home is being increasingly popular in South Lake Tahoe just as in other communities. Many tourists prefer to rent a VHR instead of a traditional motel or hotel room. There are many reasons from enjoying time with family to reunions and wedding parties.

Regulation of vacation homes a hot topic in South Lake Tahoe

History Sunday: The 1860s town of Rowlands on the South Shore

As the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates the 50th anniversary of its incorporation, there is a long forgotten town that was once along the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Travelers came west in droves in 1849 after the discovery of gold near Placerville. Many used the Tahoe Wagon Road which is known as Pioneer Trail today. When the first major silver deposit in the United States was discovered in Virginia City in 1859, many of those same gold hunters traveled over that same road into Nevada.

On Monday, a story hit local media about legal papers filed in Douglas County court by SMC Construction, Inc against Neva One, LLC, the owners of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

In that suit, SMC alleged Neva One failed to pay them over $9 million on the remodeling of the old Horizon Casino. This amount represents expenses over the original contract according to SMC who was the contractor for renovations to the casino low-rise portion of the hotel/casino complex.
