Cross-country skiing returns to Spooner Lake State Park

Once again, Spooner Lake State Park offers outdoor sports enthusiasts a system of meandering cross-country ski trails that wind through dense forest, across an open meadow and along the banks of Spooner Lake.

This trail system is free to the public and made possible by a partnership between Nevada State Parks and Nevada Nordic, a non-profit group based in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The scenic, intermediate trail includes several teardrop loops with flat rolling terrain, which makes it great for both families and experienced skiers. For current trail conditions visit nevadanordic.org.

NAMI hosting free legal seminar to help navigate mental illness treatment and support

Lake Tahoe Chapter, NSDAR now a reality on the South Shore

Lake Tahoe Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), is now officially chartered in South Lake Tahoe. The Daughters of the American Revolution is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, non-political, women’s service organization.

It focuses its community and national service in the areas of:

- Historic Preservation - Al Tahoe Historic Cemetery, preservation of family histories

- Education - literacy, path to U.S. Citizenship (Naturalization), American History education and essay contest, genealogy workshops

Tahoe Women's Community Fund has $84,000 to give away to community nonprofits

Applications for $84,000 in grants from the Tahoe Women's Community Fund are now available and will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019. The Angel of Tahoe Lisa Maloff joined others in the group to have such a generous amount to give away this year.

Any non-profit organization that serves the South Shore of Lake Tahoe is welcome to apply to one of the "areas of need" described below. Organizations that received a grant in 2018 from TWCF, are ineligible to apply. Each organization may submit only one application.

Tahoe Chamber event raises money and collects food for Bread & Broth 4 Kids

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.- More than 100 community members attended the Tahoe Chamber's annual Connect for a Cause Charity Mixer and raised over $2,400 and brought in cases of food for Bread & Broth 4 Kids.

Attendees enjoyed appetizers and Riva Grill’s signature cocktail, Wet Woodys while also raising money for the local non-profit that currently provides backpacks of weekend food to 170 kids in grades K-8 at South Lake Tahoe schools.

Lake Tahoe Humane Society disbands, turns operations over to Truckee Tahoe group

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Almost two years after their executive director embezzled almost $60,000 from the Lake Tahoe Humane Society (LTHS), the nonprofit tasked with helping local pets, is folding after 51 years of serving the South Lake Tahoe community.

A new board of directors had taken several steps, including the sale of their Emerald Bay Road building and laying off of employees, to get LTHS back on their feet but could never get the nonprofit's community standing back.

Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.

Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

South Lake Tahoe's Ryan Wallace wins international para-athlete tournament

A South Lake Tahoe man won gold in the Heavyweight Para-Division of the Abu-Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tournament recently in Los Angeles.

Ryan Wallace, who we've written many stories about over the last four years, competed against para-athletes from around the world for the second consecutive year at the tournament. In 2017 Wallace won the silver medal and he spent the last year working tirelessly to improve, capping his 2018 performance with a hard fought 7-0 victory.

"I was grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate that improvement," said Wallace.

5th annual Spolight Awards in Douglas County honor businesses

Seven Douglas County businesses, including two from the South Shore, were recently honored during the 5th annual Spotlight Awards, recognizing their contributions to the community.

The awards were given at the Critical Issues Conference held on Thursday, September 27 and recognized businesses in the following categories: retail, restaurant, manufacturing and production, sports and recreation, entrepreneur, business and professional service, and tourism and hospitality.

Dozens of shore birds released after recuperating at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

An Avian type C Botulism outbreak in Northern Nevada sickened thousands of shore and water birds, with hundreds of them sent to South Lake Tahoe two weeks ago to recuperate at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

Under their care, over 80 of the birds have been released back into the safe, and unaffected, Little Washoe Lake.

Most of the birds at LTWC were Avocets and Ibis with volunteers spending many hours feeding the birds by tube.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund to honor two locals during Membership Celebration Dinner

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF) will be celebrating two local women during their annual Membership Celebration Dinner on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Tahoe Beach Retreat. Body of man missing in Lake Tahoe recovered

The body of the 33-year-old man who went missing in Lake Tahoe on September 8, 2018 was located by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) and then recovered on Monday, September 17.

Suicide can be prevented if the signs are detected and the right actions are taken. Healthy coping skills are critical for dealing with incidents of trauma throughout life. Unfortunately, some people find that life stressors are too difficult and some choose negative ways to cope.

Over 100 sick birds from Nevada arrive at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) is known for their loving care of wildlife from beavers and owls to bears, but an arrival this week is unusual even for the non-profit based in Meyers near South Lake Tahoe.

Thousands of shore and water birds from Virginia, Carson and Swan Lakes in Nevada were recently stricken by Avian Type C Botulism. Most of the ill birds are Avocets and Ibis, and over 100 of them were brought to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for needed attention.

Cram-A-Cruiser day encourages the community to fill up a South Lake Tahoe police cruiser with food to be given to children at local schools who need nutrition over the weekend when the LTUSD free lunch program doesn't cover meals.

Pulitzer prize-winning 'night, Mother opens at Duke Theatre in South Lake Tahoe

A new South Lake Tahoe theater company has hit the road running with their production of 'night, Mother, a Pulitzer prize-winning play about the relationship between a mother and daughter. Friday, August 24 is opening night and the play will run at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre for two weekends.

Jessie, the daughter, has moved back home after a divorce and is depressed and is done with life and wants to end hers. Her relationship with mother Thelma is explored during the 90-minute play that is full of drama, dark comedy and emotion.

Edgewood gives local volunteer groups over $55,000

South Shore students are the beneficiaries of funds raised during the American Century Championship (ACC) in Lake Tahoe this July. Edgewood Tahoe partnered with three local non-profits who operated concessions during the tournament in exchange for donations to be used for education.

Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club each volunteered at least 400 hours at the food tents, and in exchange for their efforts they split $55,230, giving each group $18,410.

El Dorado County foster youth receive gift of laptops

Ten El Dorado County area foster youth were all smiles last Saturday, August 18, 2018, when they received the generous gift of technology -- their very own new laptops. The laptops were given to the youth during a small gathering at the El Dorado County Office of Education in Placerville.

Two bear cubs now residents at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A female bear was recently hit and killed by a car along Highway 120 in Mariposa, leaving her two small cubs motherless. The pair arrived at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care on Sunday, undernourished and full of ticks and foxtails.

Local veterinarian Dr. Kevin Willetts and a team of volunteers examined them and cleaned them up.

Both cubs are underweight, under 10-pounds which is more than half of what a 6-month-old cub should be. Their mother was also small. It is possible they were moved out of their normal territory by fire, but that is unknown.

Angel of Tahoe buys new flooring for Live Violence Free

Lisa "The Angel of Tahoe" Maloff continues to spread her blessings around South Lake Tahoe, and this time Live Violence free was the recipient.

The carpet at their office on Lake Tahoe Boulevard was in serious need of replacing as it had become a safety hazard with its ripples. Kids that visit the non-profit agency for services often ended up playing on the thread bare carpet that had seen better days.

Crews were at the office this week, ripping out the old carpet and putting in new flooring, something that is waterproof and easy to clean.

The annual Lake Tahoe Summit held this week at Sand Harbor State Park marked the 22nd time government officials, public agencies, non-profit environmental groups, the public and other groups came together to renew their focus and commitment on preserving the beauty of Lake Tahoe.

It may still be August on the calendar, but plans are already being made for local philanthropist Lisa Maloff to play Mrs. Santa again this December, the event that earned her the name "Angel of Tahoe" in 2017.

Former Lake Tahoe Humane Society director arrested on embezzlement charges

Detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department flew to Tennessee overnight to arrest Nicola "Niki" Congero, the former executive director of Lake Tahoe Humane Society.

Congero, 50, was arrested without incident on the morning of Wednesday, August 1 and booked into the Knoxville jail on charges of embezzling approximately $60,000 from the South Lake Tahoe based non-profit. She is being held there on $200,000 bail and is currently awaiting extradition.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care opens their doors for annual tours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 40 years, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) has been serving the South Lake Tahoe Community, and on Saturday, August 4 they are holding their annual Open House and opening up their doors to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

This is the one time a year the general public can walk the grounds where wild birds and animals are being rehabilitated prior to their release back into the wild.

Will’s Kids for the Arts returns to South Lake Tahoe for 3rd year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now in its third year, Will’s Kids for the Arts is a FREE art fair for children on the South Shore, featuring arts and crafts booths and a performance by Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. Will’s Kids will take place on Friday, August 3rd W:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Valhalla Tahoe Estate. The performance begins at noon.

Last year over 300 youth attended the event (read here).

Whose History is it Anyway? Comedy Improv at Dangberg Historic Park

A Musical Jamboree at the Dangberg Home Ranch

Kitten adoption day at Michael Hohl Honda

Missoula Children’s Theatre auditions for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The Tahoe Arts Project is bringing the Missoula Children’s Theatre back to South Lake Tahoe next week and there are rolls for 50-60 local students in grades 1-12. This year they will be rehearsing and performing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Its a whirlwind week with auditions are on Monday, July 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (some cast members will rehearse right after auditions, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m). Practices are held Tuesday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the shows are on Friday, July 13 at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Glen Whorton to present “The Prison in Nevada History” at Dangberg Historic Park

Speaker Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will speak on “The Prison in Nevada History” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 7, at 10:00 am.

President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, Glen Whorton, will present a history of the Nevada State Prison from 1861 until its closing in 2012. The presentation will include its territorial origins, famous or infamous incidents, its wardens and inmates.

Longest Day of Golf raises funds for South Lake Tahoe Cancer League

From sunup to sundown, a field of 11 golfers hit the links at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course Thursday to raise funds for the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League.

The Moose Lodge of South Lake Tahoe has sponsored the Longest Day of Golf for thirteen years. Lodge members spend the day driving golf carts, keeping the water and food flowing for the golfers, and helping to raise funds for charity.

Edgewood Tahoe to partner with local education groups during American Century Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Edgewood Tahoe has moved from one non-profit receiving the proceeds from food concessions during July's American Century Championship to several groups.

This year, Edgewood Tahoe is partnering with Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club who in turn will be donating 400 volunteer hours at Edgewood’s four main concession tents.
