New drone regulations for Lake Tahoe and the US

Now that the gift giving season is upon us, many people may have model airplanes, drones or quadcopters on their wish list. There are some new rules in place that all users of the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) need to know.

The Federal Aviation Administration today that all UAS units weighing between 0.55 pounds and 50 pounds must be registered by February 19th, 2016.

Turkey Trot Fun Run in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

Find your inner turkey and run like there's an oven warming up for you! It's time once again for the South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot at Bijou Community Park on Saturday, November 21 at 10 a.m. There will be a 5k race as well as a Kid's Fun Run.

Thanksgiving themed costumes are optional, but it may be the only time all year dressing like a turkey is acceptable.

Prizes will be awarded for best race times.

Measure to restrict Airbnb rentals in San Francisco losing by wide margin

San Francisco voters are poised to hand a decisive victory to Airbnb and city residents who want to turn their homes into vacation rentals. Proposition F, a measure to curb short-term rentals drastically, was losing by a margin of 61 percent to 39 percent, according to the early count of mail-in ballots.

Prop. F, the most contentious and most expensive issue on the Tuesday ballot, centers on whether vacation rentals divert scarce housing to lucrative illegal year-round hotels, as its backers claimed, or help middle-class people make ends meet, as Airbnb and other opponents said.

Ex-felon arrested for failing to register and being in possession of a firearm

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint of loud music and firearms being discharged in the 1200 block of Slate Road in Minden, Nev. on October 23, 2015.

Once on the scene, they found Alfredo Ferreira, 54, at the home with several weapons. During the deputys' investigation they found that Ferreira is a sex offender who had failed to register. An arrest and search warrant were obtained and they found several weapons in his home.

Ferreira was arrested without incident and the weapons were seize. Ferreira has since posted bail.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services holding 3k Ugly Sweater Walk

A fun 3k walk with a twist is the next fundraiser for Tahoe Youth & Family Services. After this summer's successful Color Blast Run, they are now having an Ugly Sweater Walk starting at 10 a.m. on November 14, 2015 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The agency's intern, Indee Lacayo, is planning the event as part of her Community Health curriculum at the University of Nevada, Reno. Lacayo is a lifelong South Lake Tahoe resident.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is inviting business owners of establishments that serve or sell alcohol, and their employees, to attend a free seminar presented by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Monday, October 26th, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the City Council Chambers at the South Lake Tahoe Airport, 1901 Airport Road.

160 homes "evacuated" during South Lake Tahoe emergency drill

Though long awaited precipitation decided to fall in South Lake Tahoe Thursday, the Neighborhood Evacuation Drill still went ahead as planned.

"The drill went very well," said SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston. "Overall a success with lessons learned.

He said there was great interagency cooperation with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Search and Rescue, El Dorado County STAR and South Lake Tahoe Action teams, Public Works department, and the Red Cross all joining the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department in the drill.

Give Blood, Get a t-shirt in South Lake Tahoe

There will be a South Lake Tahoe community blood drive on Friday, October 16 from 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Rec Center gym. Walk-ins are welcome.

All participants will receive a free t-shirt.

BloodSource is holding the blood drive to meet the community need for blood and blood products. The blood drive is sponsored by the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Series of classes for caregivers of those with mental illness set to begin

Mental Illness affects one in five adults in the United States, and 21 % of youth. If you have friends or family members dealing with the more serious side of mental illness, there is an upcoming series of classes that may benefit you.

Environmental Technology & Sustainability degree added at LTCC

Lake Tahoe Community College is taking environmental course work to a new level with its new Environmental Technology and Sustainability (ETS) program, being offered for the first time starting this fall. The new ETS program offers three areas of concentration: biological resources, physical resources, and sustainability. Students can earn an Associate of Arts degree, as well as a Certificate of Achievement.

High tech anti-theft dots to help South Lake Tahoe Police

With an increase in the number of bicycle thefts and other property crimes in South Lake Tahoe, a new high tech device to help the fight on crime is now being introduced by the police department.

The new technology is called Anti-Theft Dots. This DNA for property crime will assist the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) in their efforts to combat theft in the community. Property crime is the number one crime statistic in the nation according to the Department of Justice.

Homebrew for the Homeless to raise funds for Tahoe Warming Room

The Tahoe Homeless Coalition will be the recipient of funds raised at "Homebrew for the Homeless," and event for the whole family on Saturday, September 26.

There will be live music, a chili cook-off, horseback rides, games, bounce house, poker run and a Homebrew Beer Competition.

The Leigh Wayne Miller DDRC ranch in Minden will be the scene for a day of fun and fundraising starting at 1 p.m. The horse ranch is located at 1625 Chowbuck Street.

Inaugural Butterfly Effect 5K Run, Walk, and Stroll for Thyroid Cancer Awareness

Lake Tahoe’s Movement of Wings (LTMW) will bring the Incline Village and Lake Tahoe communities together on September 5 from 9-12 p.m. to raise awareness for thyroid cancer. LTMW aims to provide a fun, community-generated event that will provide support and a proactive way to fight this disease, while promoting a healthy lifestyle in one of the most beautiful places to run, Lake Tahoe. Proceeds will be donated to ThyCa.

Graniteman Challenge celebrates sixth grueling year in Mono County

One of the state’s greatest athletic challenges returns for a sixth year September 11-13 in a competition that’s as tough as granite.

The Graniteman Challenge, sponsored by the High Sierra Triathlon Club, is a unique three-day combination of the Granite to Granite Swim, a 2.4-mile swim in June Lake on Friday, September 11, the Mammoth Gran Fondo, a 102-mile bike ride on Saturday, September 12 and the Tioga Pass Run, a 12.4-mile run up Tioga Pass on Sunday, September 13.

Lake Tahoe Summit 2015

A shuttle and bike valet will be available for the large crowd expected to attend the 19th annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Monday, August 24 at the Round Hill Pines Beach Resort in Zephyr Cove.

This year, U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) is hosting the free event.

The theme of this year’s Lake Tahoe Summit is “Connecting Lake Tahoe’s Environment and Economy through Innovation and Transportation.” The keynote speaker is Chris Bently, Chief Executive Officer of Bently Enterprises.

Late summer soccer conditioning class added at LTCC

With interest of being on the Lake Tahoe Community College soccer teams on the rise, the school has decided to add a conditioning class to accommodate the big number of both local and international students at the campus.

The men's team, just off their successful inaugural season that landed them a conference championship, had 90 students try out for a place on the team this week, and 60 of them are from other countries. The women’s team is also benefiting from a lot of interest, both from local athletes and abroad.

Six ways Burning Man will be different this year

Burning Man is always changing, and this year is no exception.

Some of this year's changes are pretty major, however, and have both attracted applause and criticism from invested Burners and other groups who are tied in some way to Burning Man.

Since last year's Burn, here are some of the changes in how the event operates:

1. No for-fun drones

Former NFL players hosting football clinic and camp in South Lake Tahoe

The High Performance Hockey and Football Camp will take place in South Lake Tahoe beginning on August 1 for all kids ages eight to 18.

Campers will participate in either hockey or football, or have the option of attending both camps. Former NFL players Byron Chamberlain, Mike Sherrard, and JoJO Townsell will join other coaches and players including hockey standout Michael Finderoff in giving kids a solid foundation in the fundamentals needed to excel in both sports.

Lake Tahoe Dance Connection holds 2nd Annual Summer Dance Experience

Lake Tahoe Dance Connection (LTDC) brings in professional dancers and choreographers for a weekend of dance, top instruction and fun at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The second annual Lake Tahoe Dance Connection will consist of a camp, August 12 – 14, and a Dance Intensive Weekend, August 15-16.

For the full summer dance experience, it is recommended that you enroll in both the Dance Camp and Intensive Weekend; however, registration is available for just one class, one day or either event. LTDC is open to a variety of age groups and levels, although dance experience is necessary.

Donate blood, help a pet

Time to register for Lake Tahoe Unified schools

With school starting on August 31, its now time for children entering South Lake Tahoe schools for the first time to register,

Nevada joins lawsuit challenging expanded federal authority over waters

Nevada and 12 other states took swift action Monday to challenge an Obama administration rule expanding the federal government’s authority over non-navigational waters.

The suit, joined by Attorney General Adam Laxalt with the blessing of Gov. Brian Sandoval, was filed in federal court in the southeastern district of North Dakota on the same day a final rule expanding the definition of “Waters in the United States” was published in the Federal Register.

'Swim for Africa' Paint & Sip fundraiser

Swim For Africa was founded in 2010 by the three Carter sisters from South Lake Tahoe to help raise support for children in Athi River, Kenya. Each year, 'Swim For Africa' helps the Athi River children by providing their families with necessary funds for schooling, school supplies, and food. 'Swim For Africa' relies on the donations of others and the comfort that community can bring to fund 7-8 children in school and 3-4 families with food.
