Bay Area man drowns in Lake Tahoe at Zephyr Cove

10:45 p.m. update: A San Mateo County Correctional Officer has been identified as the victim in Tuesday's drowning at Zephyr Cove.

"It is with great sadness we announce the death of Correctional Officer Andreiam Jeffrey “AJ” Arqueza. AJ passed yesterday afternoon in a drowning accident while enjoying days off with friends in the Lake Tahoe area," said the San Mateo County Code 30 Foundation on a Facebook post.

Hike with a ranger this summer in Lake Tahoe

The sun is out, the snow is melting and now is the time to get out and enjoy summer on your National Forest lands. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) it partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort once again 'invites the public to 'Hike with a Ranger' beginning July 12, 2019. Hikes will take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and continue every weekend through September 8, 2019, weather permitting.

Today, 402 people volunteered along the shoreline of Lake Tahoe to protect this national treasure. As part of a lakewide cleanup organized by the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue), participants removed 1240.25 pounds of litter that would have harmed the Lake’s ecology.

Parade, food trucks and fireworks highlight South Lake Tahoe 4th of July

To start off the holiday, the City of South Lake Tahoe is organizing the annual 4th of July parade down Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.

Reuters: Sources say Eldorado Resorts clinches $18 billion cash and stock deal for Caesars

U.S. casino operator Eldorado Resorts Inc of Reno has agreed to merge with Caesars Entertainment Corp in a cash and stock deal that values its peer at about $18 billion including debt, people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday.

The agreement comes three months after Reuters reported that Caesars had agreed to give Eldorado access to its books under pressure from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who earlier this year was awarded seats on Caesars’ board.

Free food for South Lake Tahoe youth all summer with Bread & Broth 4 Kids program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

Record number of youth participate in Zephyr Cove tennis clinic

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. – A record number of youth participated in the annual free tennis clinic at the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club on June 8. The 66 young players were guided by a team of seasoned players on the fundamentals of the sport.

Not only did the kids get to take away new tennis skills, but they also left with a shirt or towel that was donated by Vail Resorts, the parent company of Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Head pro Dave Nostrant orchestrated the various drills going on at each court, with club members assisting with instruction.

The future of Tahoe tourism needs to be sustainable. This year’s Annual Tourism Forum will address this global concern on a local level on Thursday, May 30 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The forum will include a main keynote speaker, two general sessions, and breakout sessions designed to get a closer look at four key topics.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.

The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - People in over 200 countries were watching as 132 cyclists climbed more than 14,500 feet over 133.6 miles Monday, a ride that separated the pack as they crossed the finish line in South Lake Tahoe during the 17th annual Amgen Tour of California.

At the end of the day Kasper Asgreen from Denmark, who rides for Belgium's Deceuninck – Quick – Step, is wearing the green leader jersey. Asgreen finished first, 6 hours, 17 minutes and 11 seconds after leaving Rancho Cordova.

Father John Grace ~ September 18, 1920 - May 4, 2019

Father John Grace, former pastor of Saint Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe, passed away on May 4, 2019, at the age of 98. Father Grace had injured himself in a fall while on a walk near his Al Tahoe residence a few days before his death.

He was born September 18, 1920, to John and Cecilia Grace in the small coal-mining village of The Commons, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Catherine (“Rena”) and Maureen. At the time of his death, Father Grace was the oldest priest in the Diocese of Sacramento.

Vail Resorts has appointed Deirdra Walsh as the Vice President and General Manager of their Northstar California Resort.

The former senior director of mountain dining at Park City Mountain in Utah is moving to Lake Tahoe full time with her husband Rob and two children Henry, 7 and Bridget, 4 later this summer.

She is replacing Nadia Guerriero who moved to Vail's Beaver Creek Resort as their new vice president and chief operating officer.

New entrance/exit for Round Hill Pines being planned

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Anyone passing by the entrance to Round Hill Pines on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe during the summer months knows the traffic and safety issues created by drivers turning into the popular beachfront resort.

On Tuesday night there was a public meeting held to gather ideas on a solution to the ingress and egress issues the road has along Highway 50 in this area. Representatives from the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), US Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Federal Highway Administration(FHWA) were on hand to lead the discussion.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Students at South Tahoe High School returned from a week-long Spring Break tanned and ready for the final two months before summer. This week was quiet as students prepared for the Black Light Dance, prom, AP testing, and the baseball team played at Reno Ace’s stadium.

The Black Light Dance will be held on April 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Union. Students dress up and paint themselves to match the theme. A surprise student DJ will be featured, so bring your glow sticks, Vikings.

Spring aging and caregiver series in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Family Caregiver program is offering a six-week series of classes designed to provide instruction and support to caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older.

It started on April 15 but participants can still join and attend any or all of the remaining sessions. This series is offered twice a year.

Cabin west of Lake Tahoe suffers total loss in fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home at the intersection of Highway 50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road in the historic community of Phillips is a total loss after a fire ripped through it Friday night.

At 11:15 p.m. on April 12, Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) crews were called out to the scene along with several other agencies. Upon arrival, they found the home fully engulfed. Inside the home had been two women, one male, two dogs and two cats.

The male was transported to Barton Hospital with smoke inhalation and one cat was lost to the fire.

Holocaust survivor to speak about tolerance and intervention

Steigmann, a Holocaust survivor and motivational speaker, is coming to the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on Sunday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. Steigmann will share his story about life in a Nazi labor camp, the medical experiments he was subjected to, how he survived and the many lessons he’s learned throughout his life.

Tahoe is a glorious place. Most of us come here to live in its beauty, but it’s the “community” that keeps so many of us here. It’s that sense of doing good for one another that keeps many of us hopeful about the future. I’m happily involved in different aspects of our community and that part of my life is why I feel so grateful and blessed. Tuesday’s Drug Store Project for our sixth-grade youth was a testament to the compassion and dedication of our agencies, businesses, service clubs, and community members for the good of its people.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

Vallejo man dies snowboarding at Northstar California Resort

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Placer County Sheriff's Office announced Saturday that a 40-year-old man from Vallejo died at Northstar California Resort Wednesday, March 13.

Danieson Crowder went on a solo snowboarding trip Monday and when he hadn't been heard from by March 13 he was reported missing.

Northstar ski patrol began searching for Crowder inside the resort area while Placer County Sheriff’s Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue team began searching out-of-bounds. The ski patrol located Crowder in a tree well.

Tahoe Homeless Coalition receives grant for year-round mental health services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A donation from Vail Resorts Chief Executive Officer Rob Katz and his wife, Elana Amsterdam is allowing the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) to offer more mental health services to those experiencing homelessness on the South Shore.

In December, the Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust made more than $2M in contributions to support emotional wellness programs in nearly every mountain resort community in which Vail Resorts operates, including South Lake Tahoe.
