Winter Storm Warning until 10:00 a.m.

Weather - South Lake Tahoe will have a high of 36 and a low tonight of 18. Today: Snow. High near 36. West wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Tonight: RSnow. Low around 18. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Chains controls around Lake Tahoe as storm passes through

3:00 p.m. update 1/5/16: Well, the storm had another surge and chain controls are back up over Echo from three miles east of Kyburz to Meyers and on 80 from one mile east of Baxter to the Donner Lake interchange.

220 p.m. update 1/5/16: Chain controls over Echo Summit (Hwy 50) and Donner Pass (I80) have been lifted.

Heavy snow for the Sierras today

It's going to be a white Christmas in Lake Tahoe, with heavy snow expected throughout the day Thursday, leaving an expected extra foot of snow at lake level by Friday morning.

If you are traveling you can expect road controls from chains or snow tire requirements to chains or 4WD with snow tires.

String of storms heading to Lake Tahoe this week

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Lake Tahoe basin from 10 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Periods of heavy snow will begin Monday morning with accumulations 18"-36" above 7,000 feet. Snow accumulations below 7,000 feet will vary with 4"-12" expected. Snow levels will start at 6,000 feet Monday morning, rising to 7,000 feet by the Tuesday morning. The heavier precipitation is expected Tuesday.

The incoming storm will have winds with it as well, 10-25 mph with gusts to 40 mph in the morning Monday, tapering down by afternoon.

Winter Storm warning for Lake Tahoe: 6" to 12" on Sunday

3:20 p.m. update 12/13/15: Chains controls have expanded. Chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires from 9 miles east of Placerville to 3 miles east of Pollock Pines, then snow tires or chains until 5 miles east of Kyburz where it is chains or 4WD with snow tires to Meyers.

Chains or snow tires around the lake including Spooner Summit and Kingsbury Grade.

I80 is chains or 4WD with snow tires from Nyack to Truckee. Trucks are being screened at Applegate and Nevada State Line for maximum chains in possession and permit loads are prohibited.

Significant storm headed to Lake Tahoe; 1-2 ft of snow at lake level

It is still a few days away, but the warnings are already being issued for a winter storm headed to the Sierra Nevada.

A winter storm warning has been issued for Lake Tahoe, starting late Wednesday day and going until Thursday night. The National Weather Service issued the warning, saying there is a potential for significant snow accumulations that may create hazardous driving conditions.

Winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe; 4" - 8" of snow at lake level

The National Weather Service has upgraded the system heading to the Sierra. They have put in a Winter Storm Warning from noon Tuesday, November 24 to 4 a.m. on Wednesday. Since the storm is coming from the north, forecasters expect snow to hit Washoe County by 10 a.m. and South Lake Tahoe by 12:00 p.m.

Holiday travelers can expect roads to be impacted with heavy snow Tuesday afternoon and evening, and slick roads on Wednesday.

A high wind warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Monday until noon on Tuesday, prior to the snow falling.

Lake Tahoe Receives Highly Anticipated Snow

Almost a foot of snow is being welcomed into the Lake Tahoe basin today. Snow started falling in the early hours of Thursday morning and will continue into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, and additional 4 to 8 inches is expected at lake level during the day Thursday, with 1 to 3 inches Thursday night. A winter storm warning is in effect until 4 am on Friday morning.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra brace for winter storms to arrive as Christmas travel period begins

A series of strong winter storms will arrive in three waves and when it is over, anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of snow will have dropped above Lake Tahoe, at ski resorts, on highways and throughout much of the Sierra in time for Christmas.

A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday morning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra as a strong series of systems moves into the region.

Periods of light to moderate snow will begin Friday and intensive early Saturday morning with moderate to heavy snow Saturday through Sunday night.

As rain turns to snow in the Sierra a Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Snow levels are rapidly dropping as cold air associated with this latest storm drops into the basin.
Snow is expected below 7,000 feet this morning with periods of heavy snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches are expected above 7,000 feet with 4 to 8 inches at lake level. At least two feet is expected above 8,000 feet.
