Firearm used in robbery of man at South Lake Tahoe motel; Two arrested
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/25/2016 - 7:07pmTwo men have been arrested after a man was robbed at gunpoint at the Blackjack Motel on Wednesday, August 25, according to Detective Brian Hannink of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
SLTPD responded to the armed robbery where the victim reported two white male adults had used a firearm while they robbed him of a cell phone and other property. The two suspects then fled in a vehicle.
Basin's only asphalt company, Tahoe Asphalt, to undergo major renovations
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/19/2016 - 3:41pmIn operation in South Lake Tahoe since 1964, Tahoe Asphalt Inc. will replace their aging equipment this fall, some as old 63-years-old.
The batch plant, the only one of its kind in the Lake Tahoe Basin, was recently granted approval for their renovations by the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission after a series of public meetings. Located on Industrial Avenue, it predates most buildings west of the "Y", but a few neighbors were concerned about the plant and what it does to the environment.

PCT hikers find comfort, supplies and angels in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/30/2016 - 11:03pmWhat gained in popularity with the movie and book by Cheryl Strayed, "Wild," people are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in record numbers, and many of them stop by South Lake Tahoe on their way from border to border.
To date, Lake of the Sky Outfitters at the South Lake Tahoe "Y" has seen about 650 of the PCT hikers stop by. Being the largest city near the 2,650 mile trail that takes most hikers about five months to complete, the community offers what many of them seek on "zero days": supplies, motels, a shower, lots of food and mail.

Three new message signs were unveiled in South Lake Tahoe this week, just in time for the holiday weekend. Since the fourth of July is a big tourist draw, it is the perfect time to test out all the message signs can provide to those on the road.

Large 4th of July parade expected in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/16/2016 - 10:13pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe will be hosting this year's 4th of July parade, and a large turnout is expected for both the parade and the post-celebration activities at the American Legion.
Community members, clubs, groups are all signing up to take part in the parade on Monday, July 4, starting at 10:00 a.m. So far, there are 50 entries and 150 walkers participating.
The route goes from the Crossing at the "Y" to Al Tahoe Blvd, at the Rite-Aid parking lot so travelers can expect travel delays on the road during the duration of the parade.

Jody Filgo and Sallie Ross-Filgo have been planning their dream for a long time, and now they have the space to do it, the old donut shop next to Raley's.
They got the keys on Tuesday and popped the sign up in the window, letting people know what is coming.
Stockton man arrested in SLT on weapons charges

Justin Wigley, 31, was arrested after officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were investigating a case involving a gun being discharged at a motel in the 1100 block of Emerald Bay Road.

South Lake Tahoe Staples reportedly closing in June

Even though unconfirmed with the corporate offices, employees at the store said they will be closing their doors on June 4, 2016. When South Tahoe Now spoke to store management we were referred to the corporate offices who have not returned calls.
Southwest Gas continues line replacement project along Highway 50
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/13/2016 - 7:13pmTo prepare for the $57 million Caltrans project that will start in South Lake Tahoe in 2017, Southwest Gas is continuing their gas-line relocation work along Highway 50 from the "Y" to Al Tahoe Blvd this spring and summer.
The construction work will be completed during both daytime and nighttime hours and Southwest Gas officials told South Tahoe Now there will be no major bottlenecks that were prevalent last summer.
"There will be less lane restrictions and improved traffic flow," said Stephen Miller, of Southwest Gas Corporate Communications.

Widespread power outage in South Lake Tahoe

There is a widespread power outage on the South Shore tonight with reports of no electricity from Meyers to the Black Bart area, Highland Woods and Sierra Tract.
Liberty Utilities has crews responding.
They don't have an estimate yet of when power will be restored or how many customers are affected.
Readers at the Y, Tahoe Kets, Bijou and Stateline all report having power.
High avalanche warning for backcountry; Expect snow until Monday morning

Chain controls going up on Lake Tahoe roads
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/12/2016 - 9:07pmThe next way in a series of storms over the Sierra has made its way into Lake Tahoe tonight, with forecasters predicting up to two feet of snow at lake level by Monday morning.
Interstate 80 has had chain controls up for much of the afternoon, and Highway 50 has just put theirs up.
As of 8 p.m. Saturday, controls are now up on Highway 50 from Twin Bridges to Meyers, with chains required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires.
Missing Spinoni Italiano dogs may have been spotted in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/03/2016 - 2:40pmSouth Tahoe Now and Carson Now carried the story of a helicopter search for missing Spinoni Italiano dogs near Carson City, and now reports of the two pets being spotted in South Lake Tahoe are coming in.
On Friday night, owners Stacey and Lorne Bell were walking the dogs, Mara and Adele, in east Carson City along the Carson River and on the ridges in the Mexican Dam area. As Stacey went to take a photo, the dogs broke loose and took off running, possibly after a rabbit.

Chain controls are up on all mountain roads around Lake Tahoe, and with 3-5" snow expected during the evening, expect them to stay up all night.

Now it appears the project, also known as the Loop Road, is on the back straightaway, approaching the final turn and homestretch.

High winds are predicted with heavy snow, creating the potential for white-outs and even blizzard conditions on summit passes between Wednesday night and Friday morning.

Community comes out for parade, tree lighting and Santa
Submitted by admin on Sat, 12/05/2015 - 10:05pmThe annual Light Up Lake Tahoe parade led people through town Saturday night on their way to light the Christmas tree at the Y. Carolers kept the crowd entertained, as did cocoa and cookies, as they waited for Santa to arrive via fire truck.
With temperatures sitting at 30 degrees, bundled up children and their parents, and local community members counted down the flipping of the switch for the tree which will stay lit through the holidays.
South Lake Tahoe Cancer League selling See's Candy for season

Their large selection of fine chocolates are the perfect gift for anyone on your list, and the best thing is that all proceeds go to help locals struggling with cancer.
The See's store is now open at the "Y" from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily until Christmas Eve, or as long as supplies last. It is occupying a vacant store near Starbucks and Beach Hut Deli in the Raley's center.

Hal Cole's term as mayor during the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary is coming to a close. During the next City Council meeting on Monday, December 7, the next mayor and mayor pro-tem will be elected. All current council members are eligible though first term Councilwoman Wendy David is the current mayor pro-tem.
Normally held on Tuesdays, the Council meeting was moved to Monday so Tom Davis could attend his daughter-in-law's graduation from nursing school in Tennessee. The meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at the airport.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is encouraging all businesses that line Highway 50 to decorate their store fronts for the upcoming holidays.
On Saturday, December 5, the City's Fire, Police and Snow Removal departments will be decorated and head to the "Y" along Highway 50 from Stateline, starting at 6 p.m. As in years past, they wat to see businesses turn on their lights as the procession goes by, creating a wave of light through South Lake Tahoe.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.
