In line with their mission, the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) participates in local programs based on the specific needs of the South Shore Community. On Monday, February 6th, the Soroptimist (SITS) joined with Bread & Broth to provide a full course, nutritious meal to food insecure community members who attended B&B’s Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

A big thank you to all of the volunteers who braved snow covered roads to help feed the vulnerable and hungry at Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal serving on January 23. Being the biggest snow fall in years, no one was really sure if the meal’s volunteers or any dinner guests would be able to travel the roads to St. Theresa’s Grace Hall. Amazingly, 65 dinner guests and most of the scheduled volunteers attended the dinner.

Although it’s been a busy season safeguarding Heavenly Mountain Resort skiers, last Monday, January 16, the Heavenly Ski Patrol also wanted to help the community off the mountain. By sponsoring a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment, the Ski Patrol funded a B&B’s Monday Meal which not only provided a hot, tasty meal but also a chance to enjoy a warm and safe place to spend time with others.

It is always a treat when the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra hosts a Bread & Broth ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’. Not only has the Kiwanis Club sponsored an Adopt A Day every January since the program’s inception in 2010, but they were the first organization to host an AAD dinner when the program was introduced. Bread & Broth is so fortunate to have the on-going support of the dedicated Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra.

Base Camp Pizza, just one of many Tahoe Restaurant Group’s establishments, was the host for Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on January 2nd at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall. Their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship is just one of the many ways that Ted Kennedy and members of his restaurant crews have been partnering with B&B. In addition to sponsoring AADs, Tahoe Restaurant Group has been sending helpers to assist B&B volunteers with the Monday Meal cleanup, purchasing dinner utensils and sponsoring and providing financial assistance and help whenever needed.

“Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal event is always heartwarming and we are very happy to be able to participate in the Adopt A Day of Nourishment program,” commented Michelle Bergstrom, Montbleu Resort Casino’s director of Administration. As the Adopt a Day sponsor for the December 19th dinner held at St. Theresa Church, Montbleu donated $250 to provide the funds to cover the meal costs to provide over 100 meals served to the evening’s dinner guests.

Thanks to the Hard Rock Café, Bread & Broth dinner guests had an unexpected surprise for their meal on Monday, December 12. Instead of the meal being held at St. Theresa Grace Hall where the Monday Meal is normally served, the dinner guests were send a few buildings down to Globin Hall. Once there they were given food “giveaway” bags containing fruits, vegetables, dairy products and breads/pastries and a Box Lunch provided by the Hard Rock Café.

“It is important work that we enjoy giving back to the community in which we live,” said Leslie Amato about her experience as a sponsor volunteer crew member from Heavenly Mountain Resort at Bread & Broth’s dinner on December 5. As the evening dinner’s Adopt A Day sponsor, Heavenly hosted the meal which consisted of a hearty shepherd’s pie served with oven fried zucchini, green salad, fruit salad and a variety of dessert pies and cakes.

In partnership with Feeding America, Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc. advisors and employees participate in the National Day of Service by volunteering at events which help feed the hungry. On Monday, November 28, Private Wealth Advisor Richard Gross and Elizabeth Palmer, Client Service Manager, from Tahoe’s Ameriprise Financial Services office sponsored and volunteered at Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal. Feeding 95 dinner guests, they joined the nationwide effort by Ameriprise Financial’s volunteers to feed the one in six in our nation who struggle with hunger.

Bread & Broth in need of volunteers to help in their mission to ease hunger

Looking for a way to help your community by volunteering a few hours a month? Bread & Broth, an all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, has several volunteer opportunities.

Serving the community with hot meals since 1989, Bread & Broth has expanded to offering "Second Serving" on Fridays at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church and Bread & Broth 4 Kids, 150 backpacks full of food each week for local school children in need.

The Tahoe/Douglas Elks Lodge #2670 is an organization that invests in its communities through programs that help those in need. On Monday, November 14th, the Elks Lodge hosted the Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” Monday Meal that provided hearty dinners to many disadvantaged members of our community. With the $250 donation provided by the Elks Lodge’s sponsorship, B&B was able to provide full course, nutritious meals to the grateful folks who came to St. Theresa Grace Hall for a free meal and food to take home.

Bread & Broth provides its ‘Monday Meal’ at St. Theresa Grace Hall thanks to the generous sponsors who host an Adopt A Day of Nourishment by donating $250 which feeds anywhere from 75 to 110 hungry folks who come for a nourishing dinner. B&B’s Adopt A Day program was established in 2009 and is a way for individuals, organizations, churches and businesses to not only donate funding for the food, utilities and dinner supplies but provides ‘hands on’ participation volunteering at the sponsorship’s designated dinner.

Monday, October 17, was a very busy and charitable day for the Edgewood Ladies Golf Club. In addition to hosting a Boys and Girls Club golf tournament, the Edgewood Ladies Golf Club also sponsored a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment. It is definitely a credit to the members of the ladies golf group that they are so involved with helping the community.

For the past several years, after busy and fun summer seasons, Camp Richardson Resort has been hosting Bread & Broth Adopt A Day dinners and helping disadvantaged members of our community.

Sunbeam Blind Company owners, Kurt and Laura Rasmussen, are not new to volunteering at Bread & Broth’s dinner on Monday evening at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

They’ve volunteered their time as sponsor crew members when the Lake Tahoe Windjammers Club has hosted Adopt-A-Days in the summer. However, on Monday, October 3, Kurt and Laura’s Sunbeam Blind Company sponsored its first AAD. According to Gail Clair, the B&B Adopt-A-Day Coordinator, Kurt, Laura and their fellow crew member Brendan Lockamy were “Awesome, so nice, fun and helpful!”

Harrah’s/Harveys’ HEROs hosted Bread & Broth’s evening meal on September 26th, providing the funds and help to feed the 103 dinner guests who came to St. Theresa Church Grace Hall for the weekly Monday evening dinner. For over 27 years, the hungry of the Tahoe south shore community know that every Monday, a hot, nutritious meal will be provided to everyone who attends the dinner. For the last 7 years, the meals have been funded by B&B’s ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’ sponsors like the HEROs.

On Monday, September 12, Tim Edison, a member of Kirkwood Mountain Resort’s Security Team, spent three hours volunteering at Bread & Broth’s dinner serving folks who struggle with hunger. “Having this opportunity to help the community and the less fortunate, has been an amazing experience,” said Tim. “Bread & Broth sends people away with a full belly and a smile. This is an experience I will always remember and want to do again.”

Every Monday evening at St. Theresa Grace Hall, Bread & Broth serves hot, full-course, nutritious meals to everyone who stops by between 4:00 and 5:30 p.m. Everyone from the community is invited to join the dinner guests and engage in conversation while enjoying the wonderful meals prepared by the talented B&B cooks and served by the dedicated B&B setup/serving crews.

The Lift Maintenance Crew from Heavenly Mountain Resort sent six outstanding volunteers to crew at Heavenly’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment on August 29th.
Led by Lift Maintenance Manager, Kevin Higgins, Ryan Albertson, Jen Menzel, Jeff Reid, Kelli Renzi and Vinny Valdez arrived at Grace Hall at 3:00 p.m. and spent the next three and a half hours helping the Bread & Broth volunteers with the Monday evening dinner.

“Helping at Montbleu’s Adopt A Day dinner was truly amazing,” said Emmy Rowe, a sponsor volunteer form Montbleu Casino Resort & Spa. “Everybody was so nice, from the Bread & Broth volunteers to those in the community that came in to dine.” On August 22, Emmy and Rachel Kallas volunteered their time to work alongside the dedicated B&B crew members and help serve up a hot and nutritious meal to those attending Montbleu’s AAD sponsorship dinner on Monday evening at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

On August 15, Bread & Broth served 125 nutritious meals at St. Theresa Grace Hall to those in our community who struggle with hunger. Thanks to the generosity of Friends of Temple Bat Yam, the dinner’s Adopt A Day sponsor, the diners enjoyed a tasty Mexican casserole prepared by B&B’s amazing cooks. The dinner guests also were provided with bags filled with dairy products, fruits, vegetables, breads and pastries provided by donations from local businesses and B&B donors.

Enjoy BBQ at historical Celio Ranch and raise funds for Bread & Broth 4 Kids

The historical Celio Ranch in Meyers will be the scene for Burlap & Denim, a new fundraiser for Bread & Broth 4 Kids, on Saturday, September 10 from noon to 4:00 p.m.

Enjoy a Tri-Tip BBQ prepared by the South Lake Tahoe Fireman's Association, dancing to live music, a silent auction, games, a country selfie booth and spirits, all at the Celio Ranch which is over 150 years old. Tours of the ranch by members of the Celio family will also be available.

Volunteering at their first B&B dinner, Gary and Melisse jumped right in and did a great job of bagging food, serving dinner and cleaning up.

Sierra Valley Electric, Inc. is locally owned and operated and has been serving the South Lake Tahoe community since 1975. Owners, Sandy Herback and Bob King and their employees have a strong sense of community and adopting a dinner to feed the hungry of our community is just one of the many ways the company tries to be involved in all aspects of the Tahoe south shore community.

The members of the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club (SLTYC) are a fun and active group who have a common interest in boating and enjoying beautiful Lake Tahoe. However, this social club is also committed to community involvement and on Monday, June 13th, the SLTYC sponsored their annual Bread & Broth “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” dinner held at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall.

Girl Scouts donate proceeds from cookie sales to Bread & Broth 4 Kids

Not only have the Girl Scouts from Troop #143 been helping fill bags of food all year for the Bread & Broth 4 Kids program during the whole school year, they also presented the non-profit with a $250 gift card to purchase food with for local children in need. They raised the money from selling Girl Scout cookies this past winter.

The fourth and fifth graders wanted to earn their Bronze Award and decided they wanted to find a community service project that would help other kids and found the Bread & Broth 4 Kids a natural choice.

On Monday, May 30, Bread & Broth’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” dinner was sponsored by a grant from John McDougall, of the 'Pay It Forward Community Fund' held at the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation. John and his sister, Janet McDougall, were on hand at his Pay It Forward sponsorship dinner to help as needed to feed the 80 folks who attended the evening’s meal.

The Lake Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club (LTWYC) members enjoy sailing, being on the water and helping others. Thanks to the Windjammers’ AAD sponsorship, the B&B dinner guests on Monday, May 23 enjoyed a tasty and nutritious meal.

Club Live is a program for middle school students that promotes a healthy life style through leadership events, recreational trips and community service projects. Thanks to the U.S. Forest Service employees from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Bread & Broth diners on Monday night May 2nd enjoyed a festive Mexican dinner at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall. With funds from the Forest Service employee association’s Wellness, Recreation and Morale fund, the B&B cooks prepared beef tacos, Mexican black beans and Spanish rice to celebrate the upcoming Cino de Mayo holiday.

As an all volunteer, non-profit organization, Bread & Broth truly appreciates the support that we have received from UATL since the program’s inception over 26 years ago.

“Service Above Self” is the motto for the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe and on Monday, April 18, fellow Rotarians David Jinkens, Brian Hogan, David Kurtzman and Nic Abelow exemplified how involved and service oriented the club members are. These four Rotarians came together to volunteer their time at the Rotary Club’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” and serve those in need in the community.

A very energetic and outgoing volunteer team from Vail Resort’s Retail Group joined the Bread & Broth volunteers to donate their time to serve the April 11 evening dinner at St. Theresa Grace Hall. With funds provided by the Vail EpicPromise Grant program, Heavenly Mountain Resort sponsored the Monday meal and had Retail Group Store Managers Ryan Olm, Heather Searcy, Amy Grannick, Josh Bastille and Marcie Canale team up and participate in the evening’s dinner event.

Bread & Broth would like to thank the employee volunteers of Harrah's and Harvey's who adopted a day of nourishment at the non-profit's weekly Monday evening dinner on March 28.

Bread & Broth, a non-profit, all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the South Tahoe Community, would like to recognize the Heavenly Ski Patrol for hosting their second “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” this year. Heavenly’s Ski Patrol organization provided the funding for the 138 meals served at B&B’s Monday evening dinner on February 29th. This Adopt A Day was a follow up to their sponsorship on January 18th.

Tahoe Best Friends owner Paige Rice has a big heart not only for all of the family pets that she and her team at Tahoe Best Friends train and care for but also for those less fortunate members of our community who are in need of a helping hand. On Monday February 1st, Paige sponsored an “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” dinner held by Bread & Broth at St. Theresa Grace Hall. Paige brought Tahoe Best Friends’ employees Allison Brilliant and Maureen Stuhlman and friend and customer Judy Arnold to spend their evening helping at Paige’s sponsorship dinner.

For over 26 years, Bread & Broth has been serving the community by providing free meals to those who struggle to put food on their tables and provide just the basic needs for daily living. As a non-profit that is staffed by an all volunteer crew, B&B relies on our very generous community donors to provide the funds needed to cover the costs associated with providing the dinners.

For the past 5 years, the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra has been sponsoring Bread & Broth “Adopt A day of Nourishment” on the second Monday in the month of January. True to form, on January 11, Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra members Jan Lynds, Pat Frega and Bob “Snow Bum” Fleischer were there pitching in at B&B’s evening dinner. The Kiwanis Club’s annual sponsorship is always appreciated by B&B and their volunteers always look forward to working with our “repeat” sponsor volunteers.

Azul Latin Kitchen was the “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor for the Bread & Broth dinner served at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall on Monday, January 4. It is a great fit to have the Tahoe Restaurant’s Azul Latin Kitchen join with B&B to provide meals to local individuals who are in need of hot nutritious food along with a warm and secure place to spend an hour or two during Tahoe’s very cold winters.

Thanks to the “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsor MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa and our hardworking Bread & Broth volunteer cooks, that is exactly what B&B’s dinner guests enjoyed at the December 28 Monday evening dinner. The meat loaf was a big hit and despite big “first servings” portions, when “second serving” was announced, many diners returned for a second helping.
