Angora fire restoration draws complaints

A prescribed forest burn in the Angora fire area caused quite a stir earlier this month after wind gusts of up to 50 mph carried some of the burn slash piles and brush further than what was comfortable for nearby homeowners.
The U.S. Forest Service, however, says that at no point did the prescribed fire, which consisted mostly of slash piles and dead trees, get out of hand and the agency remains both cautious about its undertaking and empathetic to nearby neighbors who rebuilt their homes following the June 2007 Angora fire.

Annual Winter Swap at MontBleu to support Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 23rd Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa at South Shore Lake Tahoe Nov. 18-19. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students.

Tournament at Edgewood Tahoe raises $39,614 for Boys and Girls Club

The 18th Annual Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Golf Tournament raised $39,614 during the Oct. 17 event held at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, funds which will support various programs for area kids. In addition to 120 players, the event raised money through sponsor donations, raffle tickets and a silent auction.

South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County leaders to hold joint meeting

The South Lake Tahoe City Council and Douglas County Commissioners are pleased to announce their first joint public meeting to be held on Friday, Nov. 4, at the Edgewood Tahoe Conference Room. The public is invited to attend the meeting beginning at 1 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to strengthen partnerships across state lines between the two organizations and among elected officials, discuss opportunities to leverage resources, revitalize the economy and environment in the South Shore community, and improve efficiencies among government agencies, according to a news release.

With so many ski resorts at Lake Tahoe, it's hard to choose where to ski. Each resort has its own claim to fame, and it really comes down to personal preference. If you ski more than a few days a year, the best bargain is to go for a season pass. Even if you are only skiing for a week, a season pass might be cheaper than buying a ticket each day.

Holiday Tree permits go on sale in the Lake Tahoe Basin

UPDATED: The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin the sale of holiday tree permits on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011. Permits cost $10 each (cash or check only, no credit cards) with a limit of two permits per family, valid for cutting on or before Dec. 25, 2011. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar in designated cutting areas and must abide by specific permit conditions for proper and responsible collection.
