Road closures and chain controls in place as heavy snow hits South Lake Tahoe

3:40 p.m. update: It is taking three hours from the Y to Meyers, so if you're on the road you may want to consider going inside for the rest of the day. The snow is not letting up and there is a lot more to come.

Traffic heading west from South Lake Tahoe is still slow going, and there have been several weather and traffic relate incidents on US50 west of Lake Tahoe. At this time, emergency vehicles are at the scene of a three-car accident near Kyburz. The road has reopened but may need to close again to remove one of the cars.

What is best solution to keep visitors leaving Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and not on side streets?

It's another snowy weekend, and another weekend of drivers trying to head home over Echo Summit via Lake Tahoe Blvd and North Upper Truckee Road. With a backup at the chain control stop in Meyers, many are trying to circumvent not only the traffic, but the controls and causing issues on snow covered side roads.

Rocks and mud still cover US50 in Nevada and California; Other routes to Lake Tahoe open

Roadwork to clear mud and rocks from Highway 50 continues on both sides of the state line of Lake Tahoe with no estimated reopening time released by either transportation agency.

Last week, five boulders fell onto the highway near Logan Creek on the east side of the lake, prompting Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to close the road due to an unstable hillside. Progress is being made on the stretch of road that connects South Lake Tahoe to Carson City according to Meg Ragonese of NDOT. She said the "monolithic-size boulders" are being removed.

Highway 50 remains closed at Ice House, I80 eastbound, SR88 open

Caltrans is still working on clearing the mud slide at Ice House Road which has kept Highway 50 closed since Friday afternoon.

As of 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, Highway 50 is closed but SR88 is open with chain controls, I80 is open to eastbound traffic and some detours off the highway are available for westbound travelers.

No estimated time of opening but Caltrans is providing updates at noon Saturday.

With Highway 50 closed, Sheriff tells drivers: Do not go by your GPS!

With the closure of Hwy 50 due to a mudslide, several motorists have taken to their GPS units to try to navigate around the closure. This has led to numerous parties getting stuck on roads that are closed during the winter, and in the end, has tied up valuable resources rescuing them from deep snow or impassable roads.

In the winter, the only safe alternate route when Hwy 50 is closed is to use SR88 to the South, or I80 to the North. You can take Hwy 49 in Placerville to reach either one. At this time though, both alternative routes are closed.

Roads around Lake Tahoe a mess, I80 closed due to mudslide, Hwy 50 closed again near Ice House

4:30 p.m. update: Just as the Highway 50 opened, it is once again closed in both directions due to a "large mud slide" at Ice House Road, the third slide on Highway 50 today.

4:30 p.m. update: Highway 50 through Kyburz is back open. Traffic is reduced to one-lane controlled traffic, but moving.

Highway 50 near Kyburz reopens after mud flows over roadway

Caltrans closed part of Highway 50 near Kyburz Wednesday afternoon to allow them time to clean up a river of mud that was flowing over the roadway.

Travelers between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe had up to an hour delay as crews cleaned out overflowing culverts to get the water moving in a direction that wouldn't hamper drivers.

With more heavy rains on the way, and ground that is already saturated, residents and drivers can expect more of the same through Friday.

South Lake Tahoe Mayor Sass: Snow removal, fire code, state of emergency and more

It’s been great seeing all of my friends and acquaintances who have lived here for less than 10 years posting photos and sharing how Snowmageddon 2017 has blown them away. I did the same when I first moved to Tahoe back in the 70’s and storms like this were not uncommon. Back then playing was more important than clearing the snow. I had a big Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and I j drove over the snow in my driveway and packed it down. I did not own a snowblower and can’t remember shoveling much. One year the packed snow was so high I could not get the truck under the carport.

One million thanks to all who participated in Women's March Lake Tahoe

It was a very special event for our community thanks to all the media coverage, the special care provided by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the cooperation of Caltrans, the dynamic organizational committee and more than 530 hardy people who came out to participate during a snowstorm.

It was a sight to behold!

Sincerely,
Vicki Raucci Gonzales

Snow making a comeback in Lake Tahoe

Snow. You know, that frozen, fluffy white stuff that covers the mountains around Lake Tahoe? With less than stellar snowpacks over the last several winters, many might have forgotten what snowstorms really could look like in South Lake Tahoe. This week, however, memories are being refreshed with a blizzard impacting the Sierra Nevada that could bring up to seven feet of snow to the lake.
