The Placer County Sheriff's Office has arrested 27-year-old Justin Moe of San Francisco after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend while she slept in the Blackwood Canyon area of Lake Tahoe.

On Monday, September 24, deputies responded to the area after the victim said the suspect stabbed her, then fled barefoot into the woods wearing a southwestern pattern blanket.

Sheriff K9s responded to search the area to search with deputies. Moe was eventually caught by the Placer Sheriff Off-Highway-Vehicle (OHV) team.

In classic Tahoe style, when there is a problem we study it. In the past five years, the housing issue has been studied on several fronts. In that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Placer County and the North Tahoe-Truckee area have all conducted Housing Studies and the City of South Lake Tahoe updated its Housing Element. What has been the result of all these studies? This column highlights the key recommendations from those studies and where we are now in terms of implementation.

8:20 p.m. update 8/4/18: The North Fire acreage has grown to approximately 700 acres. It continues to burn in the North Fork of the American River Canyon, and area characterized by steep, rugged terrain. The Helibase has been been moved to Truckee. It remains at 10% contained.

9:00 a.m. update 9/4/18: Updated mapping has shown the North fire has burned 500 acres. Hand crews, dozers, and engines worked through the night establishing an anchor point and starting to flank the fire with handline, hose lays, and dozer line. 10 percent contained.

The SR89 Recreation Management Plan is being created to develop transportation and visitation management strategies and address the challenges of the corridor’s extensive transportation and recreation travel demand. This is a collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations and the public has a chance to weigh in.

Five South Lake Tahoe residents have been arrested by the Placer County Sheriff's Office on burglary charges after a Homewood, California home was broken into twice in the past week.

After the first incident on July 24, deputies responded to Sacramento Avenue in Homewood for a reported residential burglary. The burglars had broken into a home and stole numerous items, including a Mercedes Benz that had been parked in the garage.

Two people died Tuesday after the crash of a single-engine airplane in Truckee.

Shortly before 7:40 a.m. on July 17, 2018, the single-engine piston Navion-B crashed near the Northstar golf course on the west side of Highway 267, not far from the Truckee-Tahoe Airport.

The pilot left the airport and was heading east at 7:33 a.m. and almost immediately reported engine problems and put out a May Day call. He was trying to return to the airport when the crash occurred, a mile away according to an airport spokesperson.

A collaboration of 17 agencies and organizations are working on what is being called the 'SR 89 Recreation Management Plan,' which covers the stretch from 15th street in South Lake Tahoe to the Placer County line at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Along the plan area are popular areas to view scenery, hike, bike and visit beaches along a 12 mile stretch of undeveloped shoreline. Some residential neighborhoods also rest along this area.

The 4th of July is not only a fun holiday, but it is a very busy one in Lake Tahoe. Due to heavy holiday traffic, Caltrans will suspend their roadwork projects at the lake.

Roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from the "Y" intersection to the Trout Creek Bridge will be suspended starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 3. The regular weekly construction schedule will resume at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 5.

Although construction will be suspended for the holiday, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

An old, closed motel in the Kings Beach Town Center will be transformed into condominiums after the California Tahoe Conservancy Board yesterday approved the sale and transfer of up to two residential development rights (RDRs) needed for the project.

Located on Beach Street and State Route 28, the transfer will facilitate the Woodvista Redevelopment Project which will create seven units in three buildings, including 2 two-story triplex residential structures. They already had five of the needed RDRs.

Each RDR goes for $5,000.

Placer County health officials have confirmed that a man who died on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe tested positive for hantavirus.

They said the resident likely contracted the virus from rodents in a private residence in the Lake Tahoe region where the resident lived and worked. Health officials do not believe the public is at ongoing risk from the source of infection associated with the fatality.

Work resumed May 1 on the SR 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project in Tahoe City, a project that will bring a new Truckee River Bridge, three roundabouts, and street improvements including lights and sidewalks.

The old Fanny Bridge will be replaced with one that has a new bridge rail that matches the original bridge rail, plus there will now be sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

There are several reasons, as well as ideas for a solution, surrounding the traffic jams in Meyers that occur on many Sundays and holidays as vehicles leave the South Lake Tahoe area.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel held another town hall meeting about traffic with almost 30 people at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School this week. She brought along El Dorado County transportation staff and was joined by the California Highway Patrol.

South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) has been awarded the District Transparency Certificate of Excellence through California Special District’s Association. The certificate is good for two years and is the second consecutive time STPUD has been issued one.

Sierra Watch, Mountain Area Preservation, and the League to Save Lake Tahoe are celebrating a court decision handed down Monday that halts the controversial Martis Valley West Project, a massive North Tahoe development proposal.

Residents are invited to become involved as Placer County develops a Sustainability Plan which will outline ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage climate risks that threaten property value, natural resources and Placer quality of life

There will be two community workshops in March where the public can learn about the plan’s purpose and goals and how to become involved in the planning process.

With over a foot of new snow Friday morning, crews are working to clear the roadways and area highways have been closed a few times due to collisions, heavy snow and avalanche controls.

A Truckee man died after falling more than 100 feet down a cliff Wednesday night, Placer County sheriff's officials said.

The Placer Search and Rescue and Nordic teams responded when they received a call of a fallen hiker at 10:00 p.m. near Squaw Valley.

The unidentified man was with two friends in the area of Big Chief, just east of Highway 89 and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. The men, in their 20s and 30s, did some rock climbing during daylight hours and then went to hike to the top of Big Chief after dark with their headlamps on.

Conserving and restoring Lake Tahoe’s natural environment and revitalizing its communities requires a delicate balancing act. Historically, building consensus around how to strike that balance has been one of the region’s greatest difficulties.

Lake Tahoe reached its strongest-ever consensus on that balance with the 2012 Regional Plan and its focus on sustainable redevelopment to restore natural areas, bring legacy development up to modern environmental standards, and create walkable, bikeable, and vibrant town centers.

Finding a spot to build a snowman or do a little snowshoeing will be a little easier this winter as Placer County’s Squaw Valley Park in Olympic Valley will remain open to offer a free snow play option for visitors and residents.

The park’s parking area will be plowed all winter long, creating a free and convenient place to park and play.
