Search to resume Wednesday for man missing in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A man who had been swimming with friends is missing tonight in Lake Tahoe off the southern shore and the search for him will resume Wednesday morning.

Three men had rented a boat in the Tahoe Keys Marina earlier in the day and they stopped the boat about one-half mile off shore from Lily Beach near the Al Tahoe neighborhood. Two of the men jumped off to swim while one stayed on the boat. Only one of the swimmers made it back according to SLTPD Sgt. Jason Cheney. He said the other swimmer appears to have been overcome by the cold water and never made it to the rented boat.

At 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department's (SLTPD) boat Marine 1 was contacted by a passing boat and alerted them about the missing swimmer. That boat had picked up the two men who were with the missing man. Marine 1 took the men on board and went to search for their friend.

The SLTPD boat, the U.S. Coast Guard and officers on the El Dorado County Sheriff's boat searched for the missing man but were unable to locate him by nightfall. A CHP helicopter also joined in the search until too dark to search. There have been reports of a helicopter in a search mode over the South Shore tonight, but according to SLTPD, it isn't part of their search.

In the morning, divers and a remote dive vehicle will join in the search.

This is a developing story and there is no other information available at this time.

In an unrelated case, SLTPD received a call about a man's wallet left on the El Dorado Beach boat dock by a man who was swimming. That found property is being labeled as suspicious but not related to the missing man.
