SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow has fallen and the kids are out of school so it's time for many to hit the Sierra. Skiers and boarders have the slopes but where do sledders and those just wanting to play go?
Many stop on the highway and pull onto the shoulder (well, sort of) and head to the patch of snow. This behavior is causing problems for law enforcement, other drivers and is an accident waiting to happen.

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, Stephen Bannar, loving husband and father of Brandon and Allison, passed away at the age of 55. Stephen was born in Camden, New Jersey on March 18, 1963. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1985 and completed his Medical Degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1990. Stephen practiced Orthopedic Surgery for 25 years. On May 18, 1991, he married Barbara Lee Storck. They raised two children Brandon and Allison.

Memorial services for Dr. Stephen Banner, a popular South Lake Tahoe orthopedist who died on December 13, 2018, have been set.
On Tuesday, December 18 there will be a viewing at McFarlane Mortuary from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Then, on Wednesday, December 19, a funeral service will be held at Saint Theresa’s Parish at 10:00 a.m. with burial following at Happy Homestead at 11:15 a.m. There will be a reception following the burial at Grace Hall.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Businesses and institutions across the country received emailed bomb threats Thursday, each demanding payment of bitcoin or risk the use of an explosive device at their location. Many of these emailed threats prompted evacuations and response by multiple bomb squads including South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is widely regarded as the largest and oldest citizen science project in the world. Each year, from December 14 through January 5, tens of thousands of volunteers across the county head out into the winter to count birds for a day. This tradition goes back to 1900, and in the intervening years, these birders have built a database on bird populations that is unmatched by any other wildlife census.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will host a volunteer training on Friday, December 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the new Warm Room space located at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.
Volunteers who work in the Warm Room during operations are required to attend a training session and participate in a basic background check. The training covers vision and mission, roles and responsibilities, and Warm Room rules and procedures.
Past volunteers are welcome to attend to see the space and get a refresher course.

Tahoe Warm Room finds new location - opens December 12

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced the opening of their Warm Room for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, December 12. This year they will be located inside the old Emerald Bay Dentistry office at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.
The Warm Room will operate nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. through April 2019.
For the fourth year, the Warm Room will provide overnight refuge from the elements in a safe and warm environment for approximately twenty-five adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness during winter months.

'Breakfast for Dinner' fundraiser for Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation

The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation is holding their first "Breakfast For Dinner" on Tuesday, December 4 at Ernie's in South Lake Tahoe from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Come in your pajamas and enjoy while raising money for local schools and students.
"Dinner" includes Ernie's famous French toast with bacon or sausage and a beverage. A full order is $10 and a half order is just $5. There will also be hot chocolate and a mimosa bar available for an additional donation, so be sure to bring cash.

Good Morning Lake Tahoe Skiers & Riders…
We survived the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and resorts that remain open this week and for the season continue to make snow and spin lifts. Kirkwood has scheduled Chair #6 – Cornice Express to offer top to bottom skiing & riding. Mammoth Mtn. & Mt Rose also open top to bottom. More snow predicted to come through with a Winter Storm Watch starting Wednesday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma and the Echo Summit area. There may be some missing calls due to sheriff's logs not being completed at time of story.

South Tahoe Now will be carrying The Mountain Resort Report by Curtis Fong during the 2018-19 ski season.
Good morning Lake Tahoe skiers and riders. It's a beautiful Sunday FUnday for ending your Thanksgiving weekend! Kirkwood has three lifts and 15 trails open; Mammoth is open top to bottom with 12 lifts and 37 trails open; Squaw has Gold Coast open on the upper mountain; Mt. Rose is open top to bottom. Have fun and be safe! If you are departing the Lake Tahoe Basin, buckle up, drive safely and have patience with traffic.
