Column: Taking care of Tahoe this Earth Day

While we may have to wait a little longer to see wildflowers throughout the Tahoe Basin, it feels like our mountain community is breathing a spring-filled sigh of relief. As the snow berms shrink and the lake continues to fill, nature’s rhythms are returning. The remarkable resilience that Lake Tahoe residents have shown through the toughest winter in more than 70 years is a testament to the grit and intrepid spirit that comes with living in Tahoe.

Concerns prompt joint letter to South Lake Tahoe City Council

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A joint letter from four local organizations to the South Lake Tahoe City Council and city management was sent Monday, stating concern about the possibility under discussion of more taxes, including a possible tax on empty homes and buildings and a raise on Tourist Occupancy Tax (TOT). They said more taxes could cause adverse consequences.

Letter: Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless needs the community's help

Are you over the winter? Over shoveling, snow blowing, dodging potholes, scraping ice off of windshields, wearing at least three layers, losing power, and being cold? We all are. For most of us, this winter has been cold, tiresome, and long, long, long. We have, however, had a warm place to stay or call home, food on the table, a bed to sleep in each night, and some heat.

Letter to the Editor: Republican women host Nevada's chief deputy controller

On March 9, 2023, the South Lake Tahoe Republican Women, Federated hosted its annual Lincoln/Reagan Dinner at The Bistro at the Corner.

After a wonderful dinner, guest speaker James Smack, State of Nevada's chief deputy controller, provided interesting history on President Lincoln and President Reagan. He also alerted the group about the dangers of a new investment strategy being pushed called “ESG” (Environmental, Social, and Governance). Many of the larger banking institutions are investing monies into ESG funds, which are risky at best, he said.

Letter to the Editor: Stop EDC supervisors from disbanding Human Rights Commission, ending bias training

El Dorado County Board of Supervisors is planning to dissolve the Human Rights Commission through the consent calendar on their agenda for March 21 at 10 a.m.

Column: Weathering Tahoe's storms

Tahoe’s perseverance has been on full display over the past weeks as residents, businesses, plow drivers, and emergency responders have managed a dangerous and exhausting confluence of atmospheric rivers and winter weather. While we welcome the snowpack and the water it brings, the intensity at which it arrived has major downsides for our communities and the lake.

Letter to the Editor: Long-time admirer of Diane Feinstein appreciates her service

Dear Editor: As a long-time resident of South Lake Tahoe, a native San Franciscan, retired city chief executive, and good government advocate, I offer these comments to your readers and to Senator Feinstein.

Column: Housing solutions to make Tahoe more livable

Lake Tahoe is a wonder not only because of the brilliant blue lake and towering mountains that hold it in place but also because of the vibrant communities and people that reside here. It is incredibly rare to have this magnitude of pristine beauty and diverse communities that together support a $5 billion regional economy.

Letter: South Lake Tahoe Republican Women, Federated monthly meeting update

The South Lake Tahoe Republican Women Federated hosted its February luncheon and meeting featuring guest speakers Nevada State Controller Andy Matthews, and Tamara Wallace, South Lake Tahoe city councilmember.

As Nevada’s State Controller, Matthews is acting as the Chief Fiscal Officer for the State. Mr. Matthews spoke to the group about increasing government transparency and accountability in governmental financial matters. One transparency goal would be to develop a plan to put all government spending online.

Column: Tahoe's conservation continues

The recent glimpses of clear skies, frosted forests, and Lake Tahoe’s mesmerizing blue hues have a way of perfectly framing nature’s power and beauty. Amidst a series of no less than nine extreme storm systems, we find ourselves simultaneously grateful for the abundance of snow and belittled by the size of the berms.

Opinion: The Republicans' Challenge

Two irresistible forces are converging over the election of a Speaker of the House. One is simple math; the other is the full weight of history.

Republicans are only in the majority if they vote as a majority. In a House divided between 222 Republicans and 212 Democrats, any five Republican dissidents can forfeit that majority at any time and on any issue.

Message from retiring El Dorado County Sheriff John D'Agostini

It is with bitter-sweet emotions I write this letter to everyone in our wonderful county.

We have been through much together these past twelve years. We have experienced tragedies and blessings. We have celebrated successes and mourned losses.

And, while I have accomplished much these past twelve years, I have all of you and all the superb staff at your Sheriff’s Office to thank for making it possible. Without their hard work and your support, we wouldn't be where we are as an agency and able to serve you at the level we do.

Opinion: 2022 highlights from your water and sewer district

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Tahoe Public Utility District works 24/7 to provide our mountain community with delicious Tahoe tap, water for fire suppression, and reliable wastewater services. As you lit candles and huddled around the fireplace during the big snowstorms this December,

A Christmas Wish

Christmas is the season for joy.
Christmas is the season for giving.
Christmas is the season for spending time with friends and family, far and near.
Christmas is the season for kindness.
Christmas is the season to celebrate by giving the light of love to those who need it most.
Christmas is the season to share treasured stories, legends, and songs.

While I love the season, why couldn't we have a little bit of Christmas all year long?

Column: We’re all here for the lake

The moment I first crested Echo Summit three decades ago, I was holding my breath like I’d reached the top of the climb of a roller coaster. The expanse of deep blue that spread out before me seemed like a dream, lofted above the earth, and cupped by forested mountains. As Mark Twain put it, I felt I was taking in the air that angels breathe.

Column: Partnering to reduce wildfire risk in the Lake Tahoe Basin

The Caldor Fire was a reminder to our community that wildfires have and will continue to threaten the Lake Tahoe Basin. Since then, the California Tahoe Conservancy has received over four times the usual number of calls and emails about our open space lots. Most people contacting us have questions about wildfire risk and dead or dying trees.

Opinion: It's still okay to visit Lake Tahoe

A recent Fodor travel guide story suggested those with plans to visit Lake Tahoe should reconsider due to persistent traffic and the impact it has on lake clarity. While we agree there’s more to be done to take care of this special place, there are efforts already underway, and certainly better ways to achieve the same goal than by just saying “don’t go.”

Kudos: Thank you El Dorado County Department of Transportation

I don't normally write the Kudos in South Tahoe Now, I leave that to the public, but I wanted to take time to highlight action by the El Dorado County Department of Transportation (DOT).

I have lived off Black Bart Avenue since 1983, and have seen many things change from a stop light on Pioneer Trail, the addition of a 25-mph zone, and the addition of new homes. During this time the road has also become a main cut-through for drivers going from lake Tahoe Blvd. to Pioneer Trail.

Letter: Congratulations to new city council members, and thank you to all for the election support

I am writing to congratulate the newly elected and returning South Lake Tahoe City Council members. I wish for them, and all of us, success and good fortune. As policymakers, our community’s future is in their hands. I also wanted to congratulate all who ran for office for their energy and for conducting a positive campaign. People at other levels of government running for office could learn from our experience on how to conduct themselves.

Column: The 2012 Regional Plan delivers on its promise

Ten years ago this December, a major shift took place in the Tahoe Basin. On December 12, 2012, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board approved a critical update to the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan that brought environmental policies into the 21st century and strengthened the bi-state partnership that formed TRPA. While there is much more to do, the upcoming milestone is an opportunity to capture the region’s collective progress and carry epic collaboration forward to confront new challenges.

Letter: Local Elections Matter

With Americans firmly planted in red and blue camps, rarely coming together to talk about solving our shared problems, it’s easy to get disgruntled about the state of our politics. Elections at the national level have become largely spectator sports, with very few clear opportunities to participate meaningfully in government as intended – of, by, and for the people.

Letter: I am running for El Dorado County supervisor to serve you

What you need to know about me and why I am running to SERVE YOU.

QUALIFICATIONS
My economics degree is from the University of California Santa Cruz. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, Soroptimist, business owner, retired bank manager, former City of South Lake Tahoe Mayor, and City Council member.

My experience includes working with the Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, Clean Tahoe, Ambulance Services, Tahoe Conservancy, TRPA, Waste Management, and El Dorado Local Agency Formation Commission.

DISTRICT V-IT'S COMPLEX

Letter: My choice for city council is Joby Cefalu

I have lived in South Lake Tahoe for 35 years and have worked, played, and raised my son here. I am supporting Joby Cefalu for City Council because he cares for our community, works hard for what he believes, and gets things done.

Letter: Four chamber of commerce leaders refute claims by El Dorado County candidate

We the undersigned, on behalf of our respective chambers of commerce, are writing to flatly refute the claims by Mr. Kenny Curtzwiler, a candidate for political office, that our organizations use “taxpayer dollars to endorse personal candidates.”

Letter: David Jinkens tops my list for city council

Have you met him? Perhaps you've read his many newsletters outlining our city's challenges and his commitment to developing solutions. Maybe you remember his outstanding tenure as our City Manager.

In essence, David Jinkens is a "bridge builder." He has been an active community advocate for many years including his tenure as our city manager.

Letter: Elect me and you will finally get a seat at the table.

I have real-world experience with District V issues and can hit the ground running .. Too much emphasis is focused on past political experience with City politics. As a Supervisor, we will have little input on city issues. What a supervisor can do to help city residents, is to provide quality employees and services that are required. Mental Health, Courts, District Attorney, Probation, Public Defender, Environmental Services, Health and Human Services, Social Services, Child Protection, Veteran Services, Animal and Vector Control, and the Library.

Letter: Amidst political division, we can agree on housing solutions

In a time of divided national politics, nearly everybody I talk to here in South Lake Tahoe agrees that the most important issue we need to face at the local level is the crisis of skyrocketing housing costs. Widespread agreement is an opportunity for far-reaching collaboration, and if I'm elected to City Council I will be a champion for partnerships with the TRPA and the State of California to tackle the housing shortage head-on.

Letter: Support for Duane Wallace, STPUD Board

In my opinion, Duane Wallace has the wisdom and experience to serve our community on the board of South Tahoe Public Utility District. He has earned my vote.

Please join me in voting for Duane Wallace for STPUD Board.

Thanks,

David Borges, D.C.

Letter: Kudos to Duane and Tamara Wallace, and why I support them

It’s nice to know that you can depend on support from your local representatives when needing help from bureaucrats in our government.

The Lake Tahoe Marathon just finished their 27th successful running two weeks ago, but just barely. We did not get our CalTrans permit until two days before the event started. And we might not have gotten it without the help of Duane and Tami Wallace who interceded due to their relationship with the higher-ups in the CalTrans food chain.

Letter: Brooke Laine is the ideal candidate to navigate the tough decisions

I am writing to endorse Brooke Laine for District 5 Supervisor. With a myriad of issues facing us, I sincerely believe she is the ideal candidate to navigate the tough decisions that need to be made in El Dorado County. Brooke has proven herself to be level-headed when negotiations get heated; her experience on the South Lake Tahoe City Council, as former South lake Tahoe Mayor and on the board of several organizations shows a commitment to serving our community. We need a representative who is actively involved and willing to dig in and do the work necessary.

Opinion: City Manager weighs in on Measure G

As City Manager I am happy to have the opportunity to share facts about Measure G.

By now, most know that Measure G was placed on the ballot as an administrative measure to streamline the collection of an existing cannabis business fee with a comparable tax, after engagement with local Cannabis businesses.

As this fee currently exists and businesses can and do pass on the cost to local customers, customers will not likely see any difference in price for legal cannabis products in South Lake Tahoe if Measure G is enacted.

Letter: A vote For Joby Is a vote For Tahoe wildlife!

When I cast my ballot on November 8th I plan on voting for Joby Cefalu for one of the three open seats on the City Council of South Lake Tahoe. I've known and been friends with Joby for many years, and have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with him on numerous community/school volunteer situations. Not only is he a true son of our community, but his depth of love for our community is second to no one, and that love also includes the wildlife in our community!

Op/Ed: Yes on Measures S and G

Facts matter in an election. People on both sides of an issue will passionately share their views, trying to get others to vote their way. It is more important now than ever to weed through the rhetoric before the ballots are marked with that important checkmark.

Measure G

There is an important measure on the ballot for the City of South Lake Tahoe residents, a possible tax on cannabis, Measure G.

Letter: Me and Measure K

(Logical thinking is the act of using reasoning skills, analyzing a situation and all pertinent facts to present a sensible, rational solution to the studied problem. (Facts don’t include statements like “It’s a fact that I think I can do this”)

Letter: Brooke Laine is the voice of reason on the tough issues

I support Brooke Laine for District V Supervisor because she has proven to be a voice of reason on the tough issues. She has shown amazing tenacity and a willingness to dig in and do her homework. She not only has the temperament to navigate the tough issues she has the professional experience needed when dealing with different points of view.

Letter: South Lake Tahoe cannabis business owners against Measure G

Dear Editor, As Cannabis business owners, we oppose Measure G because it over-taxes the patients and customers who support our businesses.

Letter: Brooke Laine brings diverse groups to the table

As an observer in this election year, when El Dorado County issues are so important, I am noticing how important collaboration and consensus efforts will be in the long run.

We need a District V Supervisor who can bring people together to develop solutions. As such, I see that Brooke Laine has garnered endorsements from two very diverse groups in the vacation rental arena-the residents who are opposed to VHRs in their neighborhoods, and the realtors who support them.

Letter: Why am I voting for Brooke Laine?

Why am I voting for Brooke Laine?

Brooke is familiar with the district and its residents, having served for years on local boards and foundations, such as the Tahoe Conservancy, Waste Management, Ambulance JPA, and the Education Foundation, as well as belonging to Soroptimists.

A former Mayor and City Council member, she is committed to reaching meaningful solutions to our district’s issues, such as fire safety, snow removal, housing, vacation home rental enforcement, and health care.

Letter: Nevada Republican Assembly president says "no" on Questions 1, 2 and 3

It’s been said countless times that elections are important, but this November it’s imperative that you vote to save our country.

These past two years have seen America go from greatness, with high employment numbers, low gas and grocery prices, secure borders, no wars, a strong military, no dependence on foreign oil, tremendous growth in domestic manufacturing, and a thriving stock market with everyone’s retirement investments doing well.

Letter: County auditor-controller supports Brooke Laine

I met Brooke over 20 years ago when I delivered an audit report to the Clean Tahoe board. Brooke asked good questions, obviously understood the financial statements, and listened to my recommendations.

Brooke has a degree in economics from UC Santa Cruz and has what it takes to make sure our county’s half-billion-dollar budget is wisely invested in fire prevention, public safety, road repair, and other vital services that benefit taxpayers.

She’ll make sure we get our money’s worth.

Council candidates answer South Tahoe High student questions on homelessness and mental health

The South Tahoe High Climate Crew Club and Key Club asked questions of this year's candidates for South Lake Tahoe city council. Not all candidates replied and there are no responses from Brad Jacobson, Tamara Wallace, or Sherry Eddy.

Due to the length of the questions and answers (there were seven of them) they were split up and this is the fourth and final day of answers with two more questions answered below:

6.What ideas do you have concerning how our town can better facilitate access to mental health organizations and resources?

Letter: We must lead on the climate crisis

The climate crisis is upon us. The future is now.

But for the efforts of our firefighters and a last-minute change in the winds, the Caldor fire would have destroyed our community. Less than a year later, the north shore was similarly threatened with a similar fate from the Mosquito fire. Many other communities, including several close by, have not been spared.

Letter: Possible ADA violation lawyer in town, South Lake Tahoe Chamber alerts businesses

The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce wants to alert our local businesses that there is a man driving around town taking photos and videos of buildings, focusing on the access points (doors, ramps, and walkways) and parking lot signage. The man said his name is “Alex.”

Letter: Kenny Curtzwiler supporters

As the 2022 election season is in full swing, the undersigned want to take this opportunity to voice our support for Kenny Curtzwiler for El Dorado county supervisor District V.

Ken reached out to me and asked a lot of questions about the county.  He was a good listener and will be well prepared.  He is his own person and will always include the public. - former Supervisor Ray Nutting

Column: Housing Solutions Coming Forward

“Livin’ the Tahoe Dream!” has been a standard response to the casual check-in greeting between basin residents for a very long time. The “dream” may entail something a little different for everyone. Ingredients may be the enjoyment of Tahoe’s vast outdoor recreation spaces, the incredible changes of season like the one we are experiencing now, or the different pace of life. For many, the Tahoe dream is simply having a great place to work and raise a family. In just a few words, a sense of community is established among all who care for Lake Tahoe.

Letter: Vote for Brooke Laine - she proves her commitment to El Dorado County

We are writing in support of Brooke Laine for El Dorado County District V Supervisor.  Brooke is a lifelong resident of El Dorado County, leaving only long enough to attend and graduate with a major in Economics from U. C. Santa Cruz.  Because she comes from a family that believes in service to the community, she returned to Lake Tahoe and became involved first in the family business, then in the banking industry. This was followed by terms on the City Council and as Mayor.

Letter: David Jinkens has integrity and is a man of his word

David Jinkens is a person of his word and has very high integrity, two characteristics that have always been valued by me. He would be a valuable asset to the community and the city council as a council member.

Letter: Brooke Laine understands our county’s background and needs

There are many reasons to vote for Brooke Laine for El Dorado County Supervisor. Brooke is honest, experienced, a team player, and understands our county’s background and needs.

She is dedicated with her desire to serve. Having known Brooke for most of her years growing up, (I was her Girl Scout leader and neighbor), she could always be counted on and was personable beyond her years. She was raised by a local family of community ” givers” and she is ready to serve and “give” to our county.

This is the representation we need.

Respectfully,
Carolyn Meiers
