Letter: Former mayor supports Laine, Cefalu, Jinkens and Wallace

Although I am no longer a City of South Lake Tahoe resident, I was one for 53 years. I do care about local elections and who is best for the community. I’m still a property owner and have family and friends in So. Lake Tahoe. The community will always be near and dear to my heart. I still care deeply for what is best for So. Lake Tahoe. The upcoming elections for El Dorado County Supervisor and South Lake Tahoe City Council are important.

Lake Tahoe Veteran's Alliance apologizes for political endorsements

This following is in response to a previous "Letter to the Editor" published on October 11:

First and foremost, I, Dan Browne, president of the Lake Tahoe Veteran's Alliance, most sincerely apologize for my apparent ignorance and oversight for publically supporting a slate of candidates for various offices in the upcoming November 8 election.

Letter: The choice is clear - Dr. Kermit Jones for Congress

Why you SHOULD vote for Dr. Kermit Jones:

As a doctor and a veteran, his life has been guided by oaths to his patients and his country.

He was a flight surgeon for 2 terms of deployment in Iraq.

After returning from Iraq he served as a White House fellow under Obama working with the Secretary of Health and Human Services to improve the quality of care for veterans.

He believes in climate change and will take action to combat it.

He is pro-choice. He believes important health decisions should be made between the patient and their doctor.

Letter: Measure S raises TOT for El Dorado County roads and snow removal

On November 8 general election ballots, El Dorado County voters in the Tahoe Basin will be asked to weigh in on Measure S, a proposal to raise much-needed funds for road maintenance and snow removal by increasing the transient occupancy (paid on hotel stays) from 10 percent to 14 percent.

Letter: Duane Wallace, candidate for South Tahoe Public Utility District

The ballots are now being mailed to all the registered voters. Many of the voters in Tahoe have Post Office boxes. I am going to be at the local Post Offices in Meyers and in the city as well as places such as grocery stores at varying times each day for the next 23 days until election day on November 8th, to meet you the voters/owners of the Utility District and answer your questions.

It’s your Utility District and your money.

I’ve been on the Board in the past.

Letter: South Lake Tahoe American Legion responds to other group's political endorsements

American Legion Post 795 (South Lake Tahoe) is extremely disappointed that Dan Browne of the Lake Tahoe Veteran’s Alliance made the decision to endorse certain candidates for the upcoming November 8 election.

Mr. Browne should be well aware that his action is in violation of IRS code for qualified 501(c)(3) (non-profit) organizations - they may not participate in any campaign activity for or against political candidates.

Letter: My VHR Proposal

The following was presented by Douglas County Commissioner Danny Tarkanian during Thursday's meeting on the future of Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) at the Lake Tahoe portion of Douglas County (Tahoe Township). He gave this to share with readers prior to the start of the meeting:

What I try to do, as your commissioner, is to evaluate what is in the best interest of the County collectively
and what is fair and equitable to as many people as possible.

Letter: Why I'm voting for Brooke Laine

Yes, I'm voting for Brooke Laine for Supervisor - and for good reasons.

1) She knows the value of teamwork because of her long years of working on numerous boards & foundations.

2) She is known for her ability to follow through until a meaningful solution is reached.

3) She has done her homework and knows the workings of El Dorado County so she will be ready to go on day one.

4) She knows that being respectful of others is key to building the trust necessary to get things done.

Please join me in voting for Brooke Laine to be our next El Dorado County Supervisor.

Letter: Lake Tahoe Veteran's Alliance announces election endorsements

The Lake Tahoe Veteran's Alliance has released its endorsements for local offices in the November 8 election.

Congressional District 3: Dr. Kermitt Jones

El Dorado County Supervisor Area 5: Kenny Curtzwiler

South Lake Tahoe City Council - Cody Bass, David Jinkens, Nicole Ramirez Thomas

"Also, a big thank you to the Chamber of Commerce and the South Tahoe Board of Realtors for hosting the City Council Candidates' Forum at Lake Tahoe Community College on October 4," said Lake Tahoe Veteran's Alliance President Dan Browne.

Letter to the editor from Commissioner Tarkanian: Transparency in Government

There is nothing more important in Government than transparency by our elected officials. Without it, abuse of power would never be discovered, there would be no accountability and there would never be a change for the better. It is one of the reasons I take the time to write and send out these emails.

Letter: Fire preparedness, community and energy independence - Why I am running for the STPUD Board

Following the Caldor Fire, we can be under no illusion that fire is the single greatest threat we, as a community, face. My name is Nick Exline and I am running for re-election to the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board with fire preparedness as my top priority.

The vast majority of our water and sewer lines are over 50 years old. When these lines were originally installed they were only anticipated to last 50 years. Unfortunately, that means that most of our water and sewer system is past its anticipated life span with its replacement being under-financed for decades.

Letter: Why I Won’t Be Voting in Favor of Measure K: LTUSD School Bond

I wholeheartedly agree that, as Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) School Board Trustee, Larry Reilly, mentioned at the September 14th community information meeting regarding Measure K, that we have a “moral imperative” to our children to prioritize school safety and extensive modernization of our schools. However, now is not the time to ask property owners to pay the whopping bill this would entail. Here are my reasons.

Letter from the mayor: Measure G converts cannabis fees

Adult-use cannabis businesses have been successfully operating in South Lake Tahoe for the last two and a half years. The regulations placed on their operation are working. Local cannabis businesses have generated funding for the economy, not attracted crime, patients have had better access to medication, and few residents have reported problems.

Letter: Brooke Laine is dynamic, thoughtful, balanced, and transparent

I am supporting Brooke Laine for District V Supervisor for El Dorado County. Very rarely do policymakers in positions of influence reach out to learn more, request real facts and data, or ask what they can do to help. Brooke Laine did exactly that, and it surprised me.

Letter: Why am I voting for Brooke Laine?

“Why am I voting for Brooke Laine?”

Brooke is familiar with the district and its residents, having served for years on local boards and foundations, such as the Tahoe Conservancy, Waste Management, Ambulance JPA, the Education Foundation, as well as belonging to Soroptimists.

A former Mayor and City Council member, she is committed to reaching meaningful solutions to our district’s issues, such as fire safety, snow removal, housing, vacation home rental enforcement, and health care.

Letter: Brooke Laine has the decorum, diplomacy, and protocols to find common ground

I am writing to endorse Brooke Laine for Supervisor. I care deeply about our community and look to what can be done in the next term that really affects our residents. It is why I ran for office in the primary. I now look to the effectiveness of who will be our next Supervisor.

The office of Supervisor is an important executive role and oversees most county departments and programs; annually approves their budgets; supervises the official conduct of county officers and employees; controls all county property; and appropriates and spends money on programs that meet our needs.

Letter: Duane Wallace for STPUD

I was glad to see that Duane Wallace is running again for the Board of Directors of the South Tahoe Public Utility District, (STPUD). He is a good man.

A Letter from the City Manager to the Community

The safety of our community is my highest priority. As the Lake2O event was recently announced to take place on October 19-23, residents and business owners understandably have shared concerns that promoters and participants of this event in 2020 failed to respect our community. While the promoters claim they are doing everything they can to ensure 2020 is not repeated, I want to make the City’s position very clear.

Letter: Brooke Laine analyzes issues and works with everyone to find solutions

I am grateful for this opportunity to share that I support Brooke Laine for El Dorado County District V Supervisor. There is a distinct difference between a politician and someone in office who puts the needs of the community first. Brooke has been someone who has always used her elected office for the public good.

Column: Protecting our waters from Aquatic Invasive Species

Tahoe’s boat inspectors delivered some excellent news this month. This boating season, we experienced one of the lowest years on record of boats detected with dangerous quagga and zebra mussels, these following several years of troubling increases. The even better news is that since mandatory watercraft inspections began in 2008, there have been no new aquatic invasive species (AIS) detected in Lake Tahoe.

Letter: Online petition started to keep VHRs out of all Douglas County neighborhoods

To all Douglas County residents. We have an online petition to help us protect you in the future from having Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in single-family homes in the middle of your residentially zoned neighborhoods.

In October the Douglas County Board of Commissioners will be meeting to determine the direction Douglas County will take with regards to how VHRs will be addressed within all of our neighborhoods. This is concerning because the board may vote sometime in the future, to expand VHRs into all of the communities in Douglas County, Nevada.

Letter: David Jinkens - Why I am running for South Lake Tahoe City Council

I am running for City Council because I care a lot about our City, all the people who live here, and our future. I want to give back to the community the benefit of my knowledge being a retired City Manager with over 35 years of experience and a 20-year resident of South Lake Tahoe.

I know cities. I know how they operate, and I know how governance in the Basin works. I can and will get things done for the people who live here.

Letter: Why I support Robbe Lehmann, Heather Jackson, and Roberta Butterfield for DCSD School Board

Just one look at the numerous testimonials on Robbe Lehmann’s campaign website shows why he should be voted for. It includes positive comments of strong support from current and former Douglas County School District (DCSD) principals, teachers, staff, and numerous parents of current and past students. These are the people who worked with him constantly and saw firsthand the quality and dedication he brought to the job over the past years. I also have my own personal experience with Robbe regarding an issue I brought up last year.

Letter: Nick Haven announces candidacy for South Tahoe Public Utility District

I am excited to announce my candidacy for South Tahoe Public Utility District Board of Directors. It is with great pride that I offer my experience and expertise to continue to serve the South Shore community. I am kicking off my campaign by reaching out to you to ask for your endorsement and support.

Letter: Tahoe Douglas Neighborhood Group seeks signatures on petition to eliminate VHRs

We are a group of neighbors who want to ELIMINATE Douglas County VHRs. The name of our group is Tahoe Douglas Neighborhood Group. Our goal is to eliminate Douglas County VHRs in our residential zoned neighborhoods. We are gathering names on a petition titled “OPPOSITION TO VHRS IN RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS We the undersigned residents of Douglas Township want to eliminate vacation home rentals (VHRs) in residential neighborhoods. We find this commercial use of residential homes incompatible with the residential zoning and character of our neighborhoods.”

Why I'm running for STPUD Board of Directors

This is your District, and it’s your money. It needs to run like a business. My background is in business. I opened Happy Steak Restaurant here in 1975, at age 21, owned it for 16 years, and in Carson City for 10 years. I’m currently the Chamber CEO. I have a BA in business, I’m a graduate of the Institute for Organization Management, former Boys & Girls Club CEO, former School Board member, and past STPUD Board President. I also managed six lodging properties.

Letter: Vote (somebody) for CalPERS Board

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is the nation’s largest public employee pension fund. CalPERS is also the second largest purchaser of healthcare in the country. Only Medicare is larger. The fund manages nearly $500 billion in assets. It serves more than 2 million members and families.

From late August through late September, more than 650,000 retired CalPERS members will have the vitally important chance to vote for the one seat that they can directly elect to the Board.

Letter: No new sales taxes

Our City Council continues to push tax hikes on locals, avoiding any new taxes on tourists. At their last meeting, the Council voted 4-0 to push a new 6% sales tax on cannabis, making permanent what was supposed to be a temporary fee. This tax will require voter approval however - so this November, I’m voting No on measure G - no new taxes on locals.

Column: Tahoe is a gift

Even with a light haze of wildfire smoke creeping into the Tahoe Basin, the joys of summer in Tahoe are in full swing. Following a challenging couple of years full of wildfire, evacuations, severe smoke, and pandemic unease, we have a lot to be grateful for. I hope you will take some time this summer to enjoy the lake for the gift that it is.

Letters: Calling for candidates to run for school board seats

Do you like the direction our schools are headed? Do you care about what subjects are taught to your children? Do you want to have more input on how school resources are spent? If you care about these issues, consider getting involved and running for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Trustees.

By being a member of your local school board, you influence the education children will receive and guide how our education tax dollars are spent.

Letter: Tahoe Basin owes Joanne Marchetta a debt of gratitude

The Lake Tahoe Basin owes Joanne Marchetta a debt of gratitude. In her 13 years leading the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, she brought on a talented team of expert staff; reengaged TRPA in the community; worked with a wide range of private, public and nonprofit groups; and rolled out long-term strategies that are helping preserve everything Tahoe is known and loved for.

Column: Carrying Epic Collaboration Forward

Over the past decade and a half working to protect and restore Lake Tahoe, I’ve learned many lessons. The first is that being paralyzed by our differences has dire consequences for the lake and our communities. Doing nothing is not an option. The second and most important lesson is that achieving anything requires each of us to find common ground, get over our turf, and work toward shared goals. Sounds simple, but in today’s fractured world, working to find common ground takes special work and the work is never done.

Message from South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County education leaders and law enforcement partners on school safety

In El Dorado County, keeping students and schools safe is a top priority for every educational leader and law enforcement agency. Increasingly, families are asking about planning and preparedness for school emergencies, as well as prevention efforts. As a county, we have developed strong partnerships between schools, law enforcement, and school community partners to improve campus and community safety.

Letter to the Editor: A vote for Wallace is a vote for community

There is one thing I have learned in my many years as a business owner and in my support through community service: You simply cannot hide behavior.

Letter to the Editor: Why we support Brooke Laine for Supervisor

The Laine family has had a cabin in Christmas Valley for 88 years (!) which the family enjoys each summer. When the Calder fire roared up the canyon, Brooke and a neighbor didn't wait for help. They cleared 85 bags of duff from the forest floor and built a firebreak the length of six cabins. No one else was doing it, so they did.

Letter to the Editor: Wallace says more mental health services needed

One last word is needed before we all vote on Tuesday or mail in our ballots. That is Mental Health – I realize that is two words, but the problem is also twice as big as most people realize. This is especially true in our city and county.

Counties in California are assigned the job of providing mental health services by the State of California. It probably comes as no surprise that most of the office staff and mental health workers live and work in Placerville. Yet we are the largest city in the entire county.

Letter to the Editor: Tamara Wallace campaign announces endorsements

The Tamara Wallace for County Supervisor campaign is proud to announce

The El Dorado County Association of Realtors
Former Mayor of South Lake Tahoe, Kathay Lovell

The El Dorado County Republican Central Committee
Trans-Sierra Investments, The Shops at Heavenly Village

Letter: Brooke Laine is qualified and extremely capable

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to vote for Brooke Laine for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors District 5. She is eminently qualified and extremely capable. Brooke has served on the South Lake Tahoe City Council several times, and I have seen her in action there. Brooke has the ability to listen carefully and when she speaks, it is well thought out and succinct. Therefore, people listen and with her help, can make compromises for the benefit of everyone.

Letter to the Editor: Vail Resorts has an epic impact on Boys and Girl Club of Lake Tahoe

Vail support enables our Club to have an ‘epic’ impact on our members and working families.

It is hard to believe that another summer vacation is approaching and another school year has come to a close. However, at the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (Club), the change from school year to summer just means longer hours and even more time for fun and education.

Letter: El Dorado County prosecutors endorse Lesley Gomes Barlow for Superior Court Judge

The Lesley Gomes Barlow for Judge campaign announces endorsements from sixteen El Dorado County prosecutors, including Chief Assistant District Attorney, Joe Alexander. The Deputy District Attorneys represent the People of the State of California and are responsible for prosecuting crimes, protecting victims of those crimes, public safety and providing paths to reform. They spend a majority of their time in the courtroom and know the importance of having a fair, firm and competent judge on the bench.

Letter to the Editor: Laine will tackle the issues and work with residents

Dear District V Residents: I am running to serve as your local County Supervisor.

As a lifelong El Dorado County resident, I have years of experience in both the public and private sectors. Together we have survived fighting COVID and fires. We have supported one another in our communities making them a purposeful place to live, work, and play.

Letter: Tamara Wallace works tirelessly for us

As a lifetime resident of El Dorado County, I’ve seen my share of City Council members and County Supervisors. Some were excellent leaders and others struggled to live up to the task of taking what the citizens wanted and turning it into public policy. Others faded in times of crisis.

We have four people running for County Supervisor this time. The one I know best and am voting for is Tamara Wallace because she has proven, not just promised, that she can do those important two things.

Letter: Brooke Laine is the wise choice for County Supervisor

I am writing to endorse Brooke Laine for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors, District 5. I’ve known Brooke both personally and professionally for many years. I’ve worked with her on projects and issues and have seen her leadership firsthand. She’s not only the best choice to represent District 5, she’s the wise choice.

Letter: Forty judicial officers statewide endorse Slossberg for judge

The growing number of statewide judicial officers endorsing Gary Slossberg’s campaign for El Dorado County Superior Court Judge has reached forty. Among the judicial officers recently joining the list are Chief Judge Victorio L. Shaw of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Tribal Court and Superior Court Commissioner (Ret.) William Neil Shepherd. They join every current El Dorado County Superior Court Judge and every retired El Dorado County Superior Court Judge that has endorsed a candidate in supporting Slossberg.

Letter: Jeffrey Spencer for Supervisor, District 5

In March 2022, the county group known as Residents for Tahoe conducted interviews with the four candidates vying for El Dorado County Supervisor, District 5. After each candidate left, the panelists discussed and scored the answers to each of the six questions.

As one of the panelists, I have come to the conclusion that the scores don’t lie, and Jeffrey Spencer, with the highest score, is the choice for Supervisor.

The Tahoe Mountain News has also concluded this, for many of the same reasons, and I agree with all of the assertions in the TMN’s endorsement.

Letter: I am your local qualified judge candidate

I am Lesley Gomes Barlow and I am your "local resident candidate" for your next El Dorado County Superior Court Judge, and I am writing to share with you why I believe that matters.

Letter: Laine is the one

I have listened to two Board of Supervisor District 5 candidate forums. Each of the candidates was given tough questions to answer. But hands down, Brooke Laine is the one - who gave the most thoughtful & coherent answers – who had the best understanding of the District 5 issues – who had the best handle on how the county government & independent agencies work. With her years of experience working respectfully with others to solve problems, Brooke is the one candidate best suited to working with the other El Dorado County supervisors to find real solutions.

Letter: Current and retired judges support Gary Slossberg for superior court judge

One of the most important elections on the June 7th ballot is the election for superior court judge. As current and retired El Dorado County superior court judges, we see it as our responsibility to encourage voters to support the candidate that has the integrity, has the necessary experience, has the right temperament and values, has established a long-time commitment to El Dorado County, and will be the most prepared to serve as your next superior
court judge. Without question, that candidate is Gary Slossberg.

Letter: Tamara Wallace is a shining example of a dedicated parent, positive force for youth

As an educator with LTUSD for over 22 years, I have a sincere appreciation for the shared partnership between teachers and parents in our schools. Tamara Wallace is a shining example of a parent who has made education a priority demonstrated through her commitment and dedication to our community schools. As a mother of 5, Tamara Wallace has been actively engaged in supporting all aspects of her children’s lives from education, to sports and the arts, to her direct involvement in countless extracurricular activities to support not only her children but all youth in South Lake Tahoe.
